It's trail and error, so it might take you a few times to get it just right (the first ones are always real bitter though, no matter how well you get it)
Also... if you've made Mate... and plan to have some a little later (few hours)... Don't empty the mate, leave it, and when you have some again, just replace SOME ('bout half or a little less than half) of the yerba, NOT all of it
It should be a lot better that time around

Gracias, Doguito. I hearts yo' ass. aww

Thanks. I work out blankstare

OMG so much effort for such little results... I know this other "yerba" u can get and all u gotta do is light it on fire and done! instant gratification!

Y dale con la yerba! But...

Doguito, just when I thought I was an expert cebador, it turns out I'm not. I spit out the first one as you said to do but the second and third ones were also hard to swallow so I had to spit those out as well. I kinda like the taste in my mouth once the strength of it is gone but seriously... too much trouble for "tea". Hehehe

On the plus side, I am able to get 3 sips out of each new mate so that's pretty good aaaaaaaaaand it's no longer seeping (AS MUCH). I had washed the mated and then SOMEONE placed it on the counter precisely where there happened to be a little puddle of oil. Naturally I was all furious.gif at first but then I realized that the oil could actually block the pores - thank God for acne giggle.gif So I put more grease on the mate and that really helped with the seeping. Yay! smile.gif

Well... if you haven't grown up with it, or it's not part of your tradition/culture, yes, it's just tea. And I don't think it's easy to explain it, if you haven't been exposed to it. But it would be like saying that salsa (or tango in my case) is "just" music, or smoking from a hooka is "just" smoking, or mariachis are "just" musicians, or having coffee with friends in a parisian corner cafe, is "just" having coffee, etc...
I don't expect to understand it, but I'm sure, none of the above, is "just" this or that, and am sure they have a pretty passionate significance for their respective cultures

First, it has a great social role. The mate is shared among friends or family, and it brings a certain sense of togetherness . Definitely a social event. You can read more here
ALSO has many benefits. High in nutrients and antioxidants and a bunch of other stuff. You think it's coincidence that I look younger than my age? hA! and that I have such a sharp mind? blankstare

According to Dr. Mowrey, Director of Mountainwest Institute of Herbal Sciences, one group of investigators from the Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society concluded that Yerba Mate contains "practically all of the vitamins necessary to sustain life" .... remarking that it is "rare to find a plant with so much of this significant and vital nutrient.... it is indeed difficult to find a plant in any area or the world equal to Mate in nutritional value" more here...

So no, it's NOT "JUST" a TEA furious

Hmmm *thinking* Not for me, no. It's all about desire. I have never seen a man or a women smoking a pipe and thought: I want to do that. I did see a woman once at the beach in Mexico making some yerba mate and I thought: I want to do that, I want to try it. I remember thinking for a long time whether I should just ask her if she'd let me have a sip of it, I never did but the image of her drinking from her mate is still vividly engraved in my memory.

Eeeeeeeeer, yeah! blankstare Is there another kind of "filtrándose"? It's leaking, yes, it's leaking!! crying.gif Ok, so I followed the advise of some website.
They lied to me!! sadangel.gif

-- Edited by Gringa Lahtina at 21:59, 2007-05-29

I thought you could've meant "filtrandose" INTO el mate. as in it's sucking IN all the water
Yeah, that's not good
Don't worry, I'll get you a good one blankstare

Actually... try once more, same procedure, but with more yerba... like 3/4 of el mate. Add just a little water for about 15 min till it swells.. and if it's not full to the top add a bit more water, and leave it overnight. And skip the cuchara raspando thingy
If it still leaks THROUGH el mate, chuck it
Or if you're desperate.. just do it in a smaaall cup

-- Edited by Dogo at 22:39, 2007-05-29

*Gasp* For shame! First broken then cheap! QEF?! furious I mean, yeah, no... no soy limosnera con garrote. aww Alright, so I did the overnight thingy again - we'll see.

@ Yesi and Guada: Trust me, it's not the "tea" for me. I don't even like tea that much. I've tried yerba mate and it's really no big deal. Ah! aww That's awesome! You know how many years I've been waiting for this opportunity? Yeah, like 18! giggle.gif It takes so little to make me happy smile- so little to piss me off.hmm

FILTRANDOSE?!! as in it filters THROUGH the mate? leaking?!
Do you have YERBA in el mate.. or just water?
How are you doing it?

Eeeeeeeeer, yeah! blankstare Is there another kind of "filtrándose"? It's leaking, yes, it's leaking!! crying.gif Ok, so I followed the advise of some website.
They lied to me!! sadangel.gif
