Since the deep sea is still in it's infancy when it comes to discovering/studying it. I think down there lie dormant the seeds of the next evolution. Similar to the pinecone after a forest fire. It opens up to disperse it's protected seeds, to re-start the next forest.
Maybe it's so deep, and unreacheable so that we don't destroy it before it's time.
