Now THAT I think is sooo wrong. I don't think parents should encourage kids (like poor Britney) expecting them to be successful so they can exploit them after, and parents SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER EVER try to fulfill their own dreams through their kids, just because maybe they had some talent and want to live precariously through their children. That is not right.

I think SPORTS are a very important part of a child's upbringing.....MUSIC is great as well......but it's not for everyone...... Children should be exposed to as much of everything as possible......trying everything.....until they decide what they love or hate......(and this should not be confused with being lazy and not wanting to practice) Being well rounded is an overall good thing.... the more you know the more doors open up for you.....

Turned out to be the best selling car design ever - Nah! I'll stick to the Agatha Christie one. Like I said, I've been saying that story for as long as I remember and geek over here has been the only one who actually looked it up. Besides, I don't like cars or car stories, 'cause then people will start thinking that I know sh-it about cars and I just know that they roll. I'm sticking with Agatha.

sorry to burst your bubble buffy, but she published her first book in 1920 (aged 40, since she was born in 1890). I had to look it up, LOL.
still, she got started at age 40, which is "late", but not as impressive as 60 . Now you have to tell your friends you were lyinggggggggggggg!!!!
I KNEW there had to be a geek who'd one day look it up. You have no idea how long I've been telling that story and NOBODY has even questioned the veracity of the info!!!
Aaaaanyway, point is, it's never too late to learn...
@ The Dawgo: I still don't agree with you. I stand by my initial point. Not everybody can be Michelangelo, but a lot of people can be good, if they try. The handful of people who habe amazing, amazing talent don't even have to try that hard. It comes naturally. But 99% of the others do. IMNSHO

I don’t know many Hispanics (teenagers or otherwise) that are, themselves, artistically inclined (other than the obvious ones here) nor their children. In fact, I don’t know many PEOPLE, period, that are so inclined
But, I think schools (at least in Vaughan) do a pretty good job at trying to get kids into arts (they regularly show their work, etc)
Also, I think, it’s an innate tendency, like sports… if you ain’t got it, you ain’t got it. I don’t think you can teach it --I disagree with this. If you're not exposed to it, how will you know if you got it? And I also believe that a lot of success depends not only on talent, but on perseverance and hard work. Maybe 3 parts each.
As far as my family goes, none sings, plays instruments, or anything of that sort. I guess I’m the most “artistically” inclined in the family, not in performing arts, but I like everything that has to do with design (is that what you meant? ) and visual arts (although I don’t know much about it), and I like to think I’m somewhat “creative” (speaking of which… If you’d like to see what I do…In this month’s Canadian House & Home featured home (House&Home of the month) although our name is not on it, you can see all our work there… About 4 pages of it ) - Now, see, this I bet a lot of us didn't know... I was just being sarcastic when I mentioned you, but good for you! I'll be sure to check out the magazine.
But I don’t think it reflects JUST the Hispanic community, I think that, in general, most people just don’t have that “gift”
That’s not what I meant
What I meant was, that if you don’t ahve the innate talent to stand out at certain arts (assuming you’ve already been exposed to it) I don’t think it could be taught to be great at it. You can’t be taught to be Michelangelo, for example... Just like sports, IMO, for example
Perseverance and hard work might make you able to perform a certain art, but it doesn’t mean you’ll stand out at it.. Or be any good, for that matter, unless you have that talent in you, IMO
BTW: ugh! How you underestimate The Dawgo, Bufster

For a brief period of time I was interested in playing the Piano. I played it in Grade 9 and the dumb thing was that the program was only available in Grade 9. Just when you start to pick up on it and understand how to play they cut it off I should have told my parents that I was interested in it so I can take lessons privately, but my after school hobby became girls
I'd say it's never too late. If you want to learn how to play an instrument and didn't as a child, you can always start right now.

I think you should find out thru U of T cuz a talent like that needs to be showcased!!! I think there are many talented latino kids showing there talent in white communities
This is exactly why I'm asking. I see a lot of talented artists in the city, but I don't "see" the new crop coming out because THERE ARE NO OUTLETS for them to showcase their talents, unless, like you said, is in whitey events or in school and such. I don't think we're fostering the love for their own roots at an early age, and unless they discover it on their own (which usually happens), this is not happening early enough. There are no competitions, no events, nothing where the kids/teenagers can show their talent in a hispanic-only event. Or are there any? I don't think I've seen them.

@ Guada and Angelita: Would you now take the initiative to encourage your kids actively to develop their own artistic talents? Or would you wait until they show some interest in something to sign them up for something. And Guada, it sounds like you are quite the artist too. Good for you, woman!

Well, right now i have him currently involved in soccer and soon will be in Taekwondo. If and when he develops an interest in something else, then i would definately encourage it. I wouldn't want him growing up thinking, "i wish i had done that and my mom didn't let me!"

@ Luna: I remember talking to your mom a couple of years ago about your daughter and it sounded like she's been taking piano lessons for years now. Have you heard of the Kiwanis festival? Does she have a private teacher or is it group lessons? This festival is competitive all across the province, and it's a good showcase opportunity for kids. I'll post more info about it later.

Well in my family it was and always will be....sports, sports and sports!! As for me, i took dance lessons when i was a kid, but then dropped it when i got to high school. But i have always loved to draw. I haven't done any arts in the last three years or so. (being a mommy does not give you the time) But i love to draw and i hope my son develops that talent!

Back home there are lots of artist in my family such Painters, writers, novelist , from the 5-9 I took painting lessons and in My teenager days I was able to play guitar, piano and bass but when I started university I didn't have time for music.
Now My son is into Painting he has been taking lessons for the last year.
Pfft, always count on Immature (But real mature in age) Dogo to laugh at something that shouldn't be laughed at.
Anyway Buffy, to answer your questions:
My sister was taking dance lessons and art classes. Not sure about it now. But in my family it's encouraged. If you have that talent and 'want' to do it, it's hasn't been frowned upon. A few of my uncles used to have a folklor band, it was called Teosinte (or so i think). I myself used to dance folk music, with the traditional Salvadorean dress and all. I used to go to art classes every saturday with my brothers. And in our neighbouthood, when we had summer holidays, they'd put spanish and art classes up, just to keep us busy. It was really nice. As kids we had fun.
My dad used to be in a theater group. I remember going to see their play, it was named "Hijos del Maiz-children of the corn".
I used to play the clarinet in elementary, and i wish i had never given that up. In the highschool years i took the arts, not because it was easy, but because i really have an appreciation for it. I did a banner for the school which to this day i think it's still up. I did co-op at an art gallery and had some of my stuff displayed. When it was time for me to go to college, i wanted to do the classical animation. Highschool hadn't prepared me for it, so i did Graphic Design.
My sister now really likes to draw, she shows me and asks me about how to do things, how the certain image looks and so on. Maybe one day she decides to do what i do (if she really sets her heart on it), but becomes better than me. Which come to think of it, i better start asking her about what she wants to do and help her out.

Hey Buff... my daughter is in piano lessons and is increasingly becoming more interested in the arts as the days go by. My son on the other hand is only interested in video games and anything Star Wars.
My daughter's school has an annual musical showcase competition (a recital I guess) where the kids showcase their progress for that year and they enter little mini competitions against their peers.
What I don't like is that there isn't really a "public" outlet for really talented kids to showcase their talents. Seems like you have to belong to certain groups or associations in order to be in any Kids Festivals or Art Festivals. or maybe it just seems that way to me
