Try this ok, I came when I was 14 years old... No English, I mean nothing not even Hi.... People made fun of me becasue I didn't speak English and I didn't understand so that was even wrost.....Can you imagine me in a classroom all day not knowing what was going on... All day MJ... people making fun becasue I was the only latino girl who didn't speak English..... I am sorry but this is worst than anything you experience......

So, when people make fun of you, just brush it off and think that other people are suffering the same or worst that moment......

I ignore and keep ignoring LOL

Yesi

Yesi, you just pretty much described EVERY immigrants' experience.  I've heard the SAME story from EVERYONE in my family ESPECIALLY my mother who was constantly ridiculed for her not being able to speak English.

HOWEVER, that experience taught me to NEVER make fun of people because they can't speak a certain language.

I guess McO's family and PL's family came from wherever they came from and the moment they landed in Canada/US, English words just flowed easily from their mouth!!!!

There are people NOW who have been in this country for years and don't speak English well.  El Pibe's mother speaks with an accent, MY mother speaks with an accent and kind of mixes her words but would anyone be so low as to make fun of them?

How would ANY member of foro feel if someone made fun of their loved ones for not being able to speak English??

Well hell, they should feel great right???  It's a compliment!!!

@GL:  I learned from the best, did I not??
Don't go pointing fingers.
And if making fun of someone is correcting them, then teachers in school should get fired!  I correct my mother all the time but I'm not making fun of her.  To patronize someone by saying, "Ok, now translate this in Spanish" knowing FULL well that I can't...............yeah, I thought so.

No one mentioned YOUR family - no need for you to mention anyone else's family.

Teachers get paid for correcting students and help them along with their education - it's their job.  Firing would be stupid!  You - good intentions or not - do it and people may or may not mind it.

Have you thought that perhaps so much correcting some people may make THEM feel inferior / less educated than you?

Can that be interpreted as a form of putting someone down?

What was the phrase you used: "Some people put others down to make themselfs feel superior"?  and could that be applied to constant grammatical corrections on an open forum?

Is everyone you correct asking to be corrected or welcoming it with open arms?  Probably not; but you do it anyways and no one is beetching too much about it.  Someone made a comment about your spanish - I made ONE single follow up and it has become as if I told you and your family off.  You over reacted and perhaps McO is being smart about not arguing further with you.

McO

As for the bandwagon jumper:  Since GL was "INFAMOUS for her correcting "EVERYONE" Could you have jumped on GL's bandwagon of corrections?  So what if I jumped in many bandwagons - I am expressing myself freely.  If it happens that someone was already there and I am not the first.  Let it be considered jumping on the bandwagon - I don't care about that.

As per whether people should make fun of you for not speaking spanish, I say it is something that obviously bothers you very much and for a very long time so why not learn?!?! u can learn spanish and then people wont make fun of you. you might feel more connected with your heritage AND u will know another language which will look wicked on your resume specially if you work for a company with ties to Latin America, U can one day be VP of Latin American Operations or some fancy ish like that.

And you're absolutely right, I CAN take lessons.  However, why should I take lessons to prevent people from making fun of me?  Why should my brothers take lessons to prevent people from making fun of them?  Why should my mother take lessons to prevent people from making fun of her?

For example, people make fun of those with lisps or some form of speech impediment, is the correct thing to say to those people, "You should take lessons to fix that problem of yours so that people don't make fun of you"???

If and when I ever do decide to take classes, it'll be because of that example you gave.  It'll look great on my resume.  I will not take classes to live up to OTHER people's expectations.

@LG:  Write whatever you like to make your actions justified!!!
I'm not complaining that someone decided to start a billion threads on grammar and provide everyone with a magnificent test.  Who cares?  I'm COMPLAINING that it was LOW of someone who I considered a friend to insult me just to garner laughs!!!!

As the "newbie" you don't know that GL was INFAMOUS for her correcting EVERYONE so clearly there's a double standard!!

Quite the wonderful bandwagon jumper you are!!! You should be proud to be a follower!!!

Are you kidding me? 99.9% of my posts would have been spelling or grammar corrections. Correcting grammar/spelling for me was just a way of pushing people's buttons because... well, you more than anyone can agree that it is fun sometimes. But when you decided to follow the trend it wasn't so much fun anymore. However, the difference is that I never complained about it when it bit me in the arse.

Please don't bow (qué va a decir la gente?). People already think you're me or do they think that I'm you. Ya nos arreglaremos después.

Umh, question... could you please write in larger fonts, I hate straining my eyes and I especially hate straining them on reading stuff that is not really important.

Don't go around assuming, "Oh geez, I guess I shouldn't make fun of her because she can't speak Spanish since she's having a bad day!"

I've never seen it as a joking matter but I've always been the type to just grin and bear it.

McOsiris - over to you!

@PL: Listen I don't know what all this is about, but just leave it alone como que a ti a mcosiris les  gusta molestarla

@MJ:  you know what, I don't know you so I won't say anything about your spanish background but you really need to relax sometimes with the way you respond to people, if you really DO NOT care what they said ignored them I learned that, it its the best to ignore people that gets on your nerves, and from the little that I have read it looks like PL and Mcosisris get to you

That's my point, I HAVE ignored people but HOW MANY TIMES do I have to ignore them in order to get them to stop?  OF COURSE I care, it's insulting and demeaning and unless you've gone through it, you can't really say, "Just ignore it."  I appreciate your comments but I don't think it's fair that people can put me and my brothers' down because GOD FORBID we don't speak Spanish.

McO doesn't get on my nerves.  What bugs me is that he had to pick that route just for a laugh at my expense.  I don't know what would make people think that that's not a sensitive issue.  That would be like me bringing up a personal situation and using it just to get laughs!!!  I don't think so.  I'm not nasty like that.

As for PL, I have ignored him.  I've received a lot of private messages wondering if PL is McO's best friend so who knows what's going on with those two.

Again, I appreciate and respect your comments.  Thanks Salsera!

It’s irrelevant if McOsiris and I are friends, foes, lovers, or hate the heck out of each other.  In my mind, all I was debating with you was grammar AND I did follow up on a comment made of your Spanish language skills.  You took it more to heart than you needed to.  It’s obviously something that you’ve been obviously dealing with through your life and it hit a soft spot and you reacted to it.

Anyhoo....since you come from a hispanic background, most people would think you knew how to write and speak spanish!!
I was born right here in Toronto, but i come from a Salvadorean/Ecuadorian background. And a lot of people are surprised that i speak spanish, especially when i tell them that i do translation work!! I think most are surprised that i can even cook spanish dishes!! Anyhoo, i HATE it when they give me that surprised look!!
I learned how to speak spanish becuase my parents made me. Plus, as i grew older i was interested in my background and continued to speak it and learned how to read & write in spanish. I've also travelled back to my parents country many times and i can't wait till this summer when i go back to Ecuador!! So you see, no matter what, people will always be critical!!!

Anyways, don't worry about what others think (which i doubt you do) and at least you have an interest in your background, regardless whether you do not speak or write it. I know you are still proud of you Colombian background!!

I agree - just because one comes from a particular background, it doesn’t necessarily mean that one will speak its language and/or follow its traditions.  I don’t think anyone in the foro particularly or necessarily cares whether or not another foro member can speak and write in Spanish or English – and if it’s brought up, it should not be taken personally, unless it’s done in an insulting or demeaning manner.

How does the saying go? Hummm something like: “Criticism is sometimes a way of flattery” ?

Yes – best way to take criticism would be not to take it to heart.

Thanks for the explanation

See, I think the point is that everyone has ASSUMED that because my family is Colombian, I SHOULD speak Spanish.  However, what MOST people don't know is that I was raised by a Colombian mother and a Trinidadian father.  So which language would be more predominate in the household?  My mother TRIED to talk to me in Spanish but she would get confused and start talking to my dad in Spanish so it was a natural default to English.

Yes, once again, I'm defending myself but I'm defending my brothers' more.  Their father (my biological father) is from Cartago, Colombia.  Their mother is from Medellin and yet all three of them can't speak a lick of Spanish.  They've got as much knowledge as I do.

So does it make sense to make fun of them too?  Does that mean their parents should be ashamed of themselves??

Even though I wasn't there, when I heard about what happened to Miss Latina, I REALLY felt for her.  It's disgusting how people are so quick to point fingers!!!!!

To those who do know me, of course EVERY TIME I get made fun of because of something like that, I'll laugh but what else can I do?  I find myself constantly having to defend my parents upbringing when in all reality, I shouldn't have to be.  What it comes down to is this:  Who the f@ck are you to be insulting me and insulting my family?  In all essence, that's EXACTLY what you're doing.

Don't go around assuming, "Oh geez, I guess I shouldn't make fun of her because she can't speak Spanish since she's having a bad day!"

I've never seen it as a joking matter but I've always been the type to just grin and bear it.

So I'd like to know, what's so funny, what's the big deal, and why throw that in someone's face???  Why re-iterate that fact?

Oh missy.....i was NOT making fun of you!! I was laughing at the fact that McOsiris came up with a stupid comment and i knew you would reply with sopmething!!

You assumed I can't read in Spanish.

whatever

I also assume that you've been having a horrible week (could be @ work or @ home) and that's why you've been so touchy lately...
Knowing you it surprises me a lot, but hey! you never stop learning from ppl...
I hope everything gets better for you and I'm glad que puedas al menos leer en español, ya que en ningun momento pense que te podria molestar una simple broma.

I don't know what the hell I'm trying to say but why do people (McO for example) make fun of the fact that I can't speak Spanish?

Is it written in stone that being of Colombian heritage, I should know Spanish?

Can someone explain to me what's so funny?

Repeat with me

Tu Casa es Mi casa
Yo tener un perrito grande
Los Pollitos hacen Pio
Tu boca huele a pescado
Yo quiero Taco Bell
Dos cervezas porfavor.

Case in point.

Genius idea.

@LC:  For people to EXPECT me to speak Spanish because of my background, is like me EXPECTING everyone to speak English since they live in Canada.  GOD (fgnrg) is a perfect example of that!!!  I could go on for hours editing his stuff but I don't because I know that English is not his first language.  EVERYONE knows Spanish isn't my first language, so what's with the double standard?

I believe your bottom line, "People pick on others to make themselves feel better" is dead on the money.

oh dear Jebus... Danny-whatever-his-face-is, would have a field day with this one.  Something about not being a true latina, gringa latina  GAWD I hate that kid.

ANYHOOO... although it is not written in stone that you should speak spanish but since you are of a hispanic descent ppl just expect it of you.  Kinda like how ppl were booing Ms. Latina or whatever at that gala the other night.  Ppl just expect you to speak your mother tongue 'cause its part of your heritage, your roots.  It does suck for the person that is being mad fun of or being called out, so to speak.

I, for one, can read, write and speak spanish, HOWEVER, since I have been speaking english my whole life (except when talking to grannie (may she rest in peace) or other family members) I do not feel comfortable with my spanish skills.  I get called out on that ALL the time but what can you do   I'd much rather have ppl call me a gringa latina than ppl make fun of my "broken" spanish.

Regardless, ppl are going to find something to pick on.  Whether you speak too much english or not enough spanish.  Bottom line is it makes others feel better about pointing out flaws in others

I don't think it's funny or important. Just because you are spanish doesn't mean you have to speak it. It is not written in stone anywhere.
Plus we are all brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ and we don't speak Aramaic

For ONCE, I'm being serious.

I really want to know what's so funny?  Why does that fact constantly get thrown in my face??

Perhaps you can't answer cause you've never said anything but where's McO to answer this?  What was so funny about asking me to translate a poem in Spanish knowing FULL well that I couldn't??!!  Was there a point that had to be made?
