I agree with your post,  CONFIDENCE is the key.

I guess everyone is diffrent & we all have soft sides, but to be this upset over not speaking spanish & letting ppl. get to you, is a bit too overeacted for me.

@ LSC: I agree if you understand my post with grammar mistakes then who cares how you wright it.

I know i have tons of grammer mistakes, but who has times to prof read your post, & really who cares . Holy this foro is in times too much. Easy PPl. there are more important/intresting  things to talk & to be worried about then grammer mistakes.

You're right - proper sentence structture and punctuation are important too!

Bro no offense but this crap of grammer has to stop who the f@ck care about this sh#t, unless your doing a report

I do know it first hand but as a hispanic, i have done my part, and i'm still doing it to teach my son how to speak, spanish, and to dance it, and to know where his background is from, now if his mom doesn't teach him her culture, its her fault not mine, my son can't speak a lick of arabic or assyrian or know where is mom's culture is from , is that my fault.. NO. its my ex's fault, i wanted her to teach him but she doesn't can i force her.. NO., he can understand it

Like I say it the parents fault for not teaching there kids the language and culture..

I also agree with your points.....but we were all aware of how sensitive this issue was and has been to MJ since she was in highschool....and all that....because she has brought this up in many ocassions.....threads here and there.....

HOWEVER.......what caught us by surprise (myself included) is the level or degree of MJ's sensitivity on this topic .....none of us expected her to react like this......because we ALL got the fact that it was not done maliciously......MJ, we're ALL on the same page here except you (it seems)....and the people that have (unintentionally) offended you have apologized and tried to explain themselves to you......but you still took it to another level of "I'm so hurt by this".....and if this keeps up in your life in the future.....with this reaction, you will never get over it.....EVER!    YOU personally need to get over this....the entire world cannot and will not stop poking fun, discriminating or judging Latinos that cannot speak Spanish as their mother tongue......I hope you see and understand my point.....

As far as the Brazilian Miss Latina......who appears and has to speak publicly in Latin events......of course it's gonna bother Latinos.....she can't even communicate with them in their OWN language.....and nothing major happened at the Fundraiser, that's being blown out of proportion......

Or b) Admit to myself that having a huge-nourmously large nose and that this has always and will always bother me and save up for some surgery to make myself feel better and improve my self steem.

I wouldnt however spend my entire life with a "you guys are azzholes" attitude everytime someone makes fun of me because of my abnormally large nose and gettin all upset about it.

btw, when I say "nose" I really mean "penis"

So have you saved up for the surgery?  lol

And I agree with your points......all in all it's in how bad that person wants to learn or improve something and for what.......

@ PL, you really don't know her to be judging her.  And consider yourself lucky that she really didn't go off on you, and make you feel like the minute (extremely small) piece of dirt that you have made yourself seem to be.

I hope you can explain to me HOW I was "judging her" for I think I didn't or meant to come accross as "judging her" in any ways.  The whole thing for ME, personally, was a difference in opinion on proper grammar on a specific sentence.  She thought the sentence was correct one way, I thought my sentence was the correct one.  We didn't agree - could have been the end.  it SHOULD have been the end.

Someone made a joke/coment of her spanish - I made ONE follow up joke/comment to that - nothing malicious.  After all everyone around here seems to joke around and have a good time poking fun at each other in a light-hearted manner.  After that it all went downhill and she took it to heart and as an attack on her personally - which I - nor anyone, I assume - meant for it to scalate as far as it has.

If anything at times, she made use of demeaning or insulting words towards me - such as the use of the word "idiot".  But I didn't take it personally for she doesn't know me and although she can say it; she has no clue as to who I am or what kind of person I am.  I was smart enough not to return the favour with other insults - THAT would have scalated this to a brand new level!

I joined this forum because I was told it was fun.  For a little while I was having fun - receiving insults and all.

@Motown Junkie: We don't have to agree on what sentence is right or wrong - we probably won't and I hope that THAT matters as little to you as it does to me.  In my mind, I thought we were having a friendly debate on who was right.

As for the spanish speaking part - yes, I admit I commented on it and followed up someone's joke with an additional joke.  Once again - I don't think the original joke was meant to hurt your feelings - neither was my follow up joke on it.  I feel bad that you took it to heart and when I made that comment, understand that I was joking - not attacking your spanish language skills.

I don't know you personally and I was not judging you.  At the same time, you don't know me either and although you did throw a couple of more direct insults my way, I did NOT take them personally.  In fact, I let them go because I did not come here to fight or make enemies or insult anyone.

Take Care.

This thread or whole situation just goes to show that misunderstandings lead to lost friendships.  It's quite unfortunate really.

I guess since noone knew it was a sore spot for MJ, noone expected such a reaction which is why now it seems like eveyone is attacking her but I don't think that's the case.

Pibe, you're right, we all have our sore spots and having them exploited would never be fun but how are others to know if one never says, SHUT UP, its a sore spot.

Like I said before, it was all a big misunderstanding, now we should all sit down, have a Tanner Family moment and sing kumbaya over a log fire and roast some marshmellows.

thank you

Kudos to you!!!

I am sure things DO get past me (or am I saying that just to create another argument? – LOL ); but I do comment on whatever comes to mind or grabs my attention.  After all, that’s what a forum is for.

Thanks for the kudos

I can't believe she didn't notice that one! You're so bad, PJ, but that was funny! Holy instigator, Batman! I think MJ just got a taste of her own medicine or somebody with enough time on their hands to get an argument going on and on and on and on. If it were any of the oldies, we would've made a wisecrack and moved on. This thread got old on the second post.

MJ, regardless of whether you speak, write or think Spanish, you're still Latina. It's your choice whether you want to know it, learn it or never say even Si. Who cares? You live in Canada and you're an adult. It's your choice. It is extremely valuable to know, I admit, and I would encourage EVERYBODY to learn it, especially people of hispanic background, because knowing another language can only help and it's such a beautiful, beautiful language. But like I said, it's everybody's choice. I went to university with a lot of people who'd been born here, even non-hispanics, and they were taking Spanish for the first time ever, and they became so passionate about it 'cause it really is a beautiful language. In fact, my teacher was a whitey canadian, and I have never known anyone who knew more about the Spanish language than this gay, he loved it so much.

In any case, just say No.

Oh no....it's not that I didn't notice.  I just figured why bother right?  Let me just pick random words and use them in any sense.  That seems to be the common theme as of late.  Exactly what was the taste of my own medicine?  I've been corrected many times myself, so explain that to me.  I don't see why a newbie is the one saying anything when ALL OF YOU that do know me haven't said anything in the first place.

What I find ANNOYING is everyone providing their rah-rah-sis-boom-bah, learn Spanish cause it's wonderful, you're Latina regardless, who cares what people think.........

Has anyone REALLY answered the question at hand?  NOPE!  Right away it was everyone pointing fingers at ME for correcting people, and it was EVERYONE saying, "Hey, it's no big deal!!!" when they themselves couldn't even relate (except a SELECT FEW).

As far as I'm considered, I've never seen so many two-faced hypocrites in one spot.

I have ANOTHER question that maybe someone can answer without going WAY OFF topic.

There is a foro member here whose significant other left him/her for someone else.  I'm not referring to a boyfriend/girlfriend thing either.  They were MARRIED.  Seeing as how Valentine's Day is coming up, would it be appropriate for me to JOKE AROUND and IN THE MOMENT say, "So what will YOU be doing for Valentine's Day?" and then everyone jumping on that one with a newbie who doesn't have the slightest clue jumping on that one as well?

I mean, it would just be for laughs right??  No hard feelings?  Nothing personal???  Maybe they should go to counselling so that others won't laugh at them?

I guess I should take lessons myself to PLEASE everyone, yes?  No?

I'm curious to know, what exactly is SO SAD that a Colombian can't speak Spanish??  Where is the great loss??  Exactly, what impact do my brothers and I (and I'm sure we're not the only ones) have on this great loss of the Spanish language?  On the Colombian culture?  Why does it bother SO many people?  Why does it bother them SO much to pin point it on a forum?  To YELL out to a woman who is TRYING to represent herself as Miss Latina?  What is the URGENCY to HUMILIATE???

LaDyBuG, your answer was the ONLY one that actually made sense but I can't see a VALID explanation for McO saying, "Now in Spanish please."  Seriously, what was the point?  What humour came out that?

Anyway, I've had my fun but I've seen some true colours and I don't care to associate myself with this forum any longer.  I don't like people who are always the first to point fingers without actually looking at themselves in the mirror!!

Unlike Danny and every other quadruple alias, I'm finally done here.

Have a good one!!!

All she was doing was asking a question.  This thread got way out of hand.  Those that do know MJ and know her upbringing, you know the reason why she doesn't know the language as well as others might.  For those of you who know how to speak, read and write spanish, does that make you any better then those who can't????  I don't think so.  She knows the culture inside and out, one aspect of it is missing, does that make her any less latina??? NOPE!!! Her background is not going to change regardless of that.  A spade is a spade, you can't change who you are.  Its what she beleives that makes her more latina than anything else, and probably more than some of you.

@ PL, you really don't know her to be judging her.  And consider yourself lucky that she really didn't go off on you, and make you feel like the minute (extremely small) piece of dirt that you have made yourself seem to be.

@McO, I know you too are friends, and things have been taken the wrong way right now.  I
know that there was no malitious intent here.  It is something that does bother her, and you just happened to hit the wrong button.

I'm sure everyone here has their own sensitive topic.  Something that if a person "publicly" exploits its going to hit a nerve.  This was one of those topics.

I really didn't know how to express this properly, and I'm not 100% sure if this makes sense what I'm saying, but those of you who look down at MJ for being able to speak spanish fluently, should really take a good look in the mirror, because that really doesn't make you any better a person.

I personally don't blame kids that are of  hispanic desent that don't speak spanish... I BLAME THE PARENTS...  the parent's are the ones that have to teach the kids there cultura, the language. etc etc.. I as a father have done that to my son as my parent did to me ..when I can to canada i was 8 years old and didn't speak a lick of english. (and still Don't).., also in my house hold we were only allowed to speak spanish, and it's still the same to this day

@Mj

I didn't mean to make fun of u, and I'm sorry ..it was just a joke, you make it up by dancing like your colombian,

Back to MJ now with my random thoughts:

1. I think the majority of us who know that she has always struggled with this issue, can be a little more sensitive towards it......she can laugh a lot of things off as you see, but if this one hits home, why pick on it....that's just mean....whether as a joke or not.....a joke to some is not funny to others.....

In Mcosoris defense.....after the reading the post in question.....I know he did not mean to hit the spot....it was an "in the moment" kinda reply.....and everyone went with it......he was not out to get MJ or on purposely poke fun at that matter....and I bet he thought you would have a wicked come back ....pero nada.....(I say this, because he is not the type of person to make fun at others expenses)

2. For those that don't know.....MJ knows her Latin food, can dance to Latin music, knows her Latin artists (salseros especially lol), has been back home, can understand Spanish, and is super duper proud of the Colombian in her as the Trini given to her.....and as an adult I'm sure she is well aware she can take Spanish lessons.....if she doesn't want to it's her choice....but if she did it to please others I would see a problem with that......

We all lead different lives, some parents teach their kids language, culture, tradition even if they were born in a different country (I'm the perfect example of this).....MJ's situation is like many situations now in days.....a mix of nationalities whose kids are logically stuck communicating in the main language....ENGLISH.....they are not to be blamed ...this is understandable as a parent and as a child.....

I personally have an issue with let's say a Colombian couple who fully communicates in Spanish and suddenly they speak to their kids in ENGLISH all day every day....even with a broken accent....that's just ridiculous.....(whether we live in Canada or not, that kid will learn English at school so why force the English on him at home also)

Language is an important part of everyone's nationality but ONLY under the individual's inevitable circumstances it's not crucial....

I agree with "solution man" where he says it's sad when you have to say for example "I'm Colombian but I don't speak Spanish".......but living in Toronto where nationalities mix and marry......we gotta be more open minded to people's situations.......

@ MJ .... I see why everyone is saying you're acting all sensitive towards this issue, because they totally did not expect you to make a big deal thread about it.....and react this way, since you're so easy going and have a sense of humour about things......but after Mcosiris' explanation to you for example....do you see that he didn't mean it? (at least not how you took it)

Those are some very valid points, and I dont disagree with any of them. Nobody should ever have to do anything to please other people. **** other people. Im just sayin that if I was always gettin fun of because of my abnormally large nose, I can either a) Accept that I have a huge nose, be proud of it and **** what anybody else has to say.

No?

As per whether people should make fun of you for not speaking spanish, I say it is something that obviously bothers you very much and for a very long time so why not learn?!?! u can learn spanish and then people wont make fun of you. you might feel more connected with your heritage AND u will know another language which will look wicked on your resume specially if you work for a company with ties to Latin America, U can one day be VP of Latin American Operations or some fancy ish like that.

Sincerely,

Phantasma (the solution man)

And you're absolutely right, I CAN take lessons. However, why should I take lessons to prevent people from making fun of me? Why should my brothers take lessons to prevent people from making fun of them? Why should my mother take lessons to prevent people from making fun of her?

For example, people make fun of those with lisps or some form of speech impediment, is the correct thing to say to those people, "You should take lessons to fix that problem of yours so that people don't make fun of you"???

If and when I ever do decide to take classes, it'll be because of that example you gave. It'll look great on my resume. I will not take classes to live up to OTHER people's expectations.

@LG: Write whatever you like to make your actions justified!!!
I'm not complaining that someone decided to start a billion threads on grammar and provide everyone with a magnificent test. Who cares? I'm COMPLAINING that it was LOW of someone who I considered a friend to insult me just to garner laughs!!!!

I dont think u should learn spanish just to stop people from making fun of you. I think you should stop being so touchy and learn to laugh at yourself for that. I think you should learn Spanish because knowing another language is good for the above mentioned reasons (cultural self-actualization, job prospects, and many more good reasons to learn spanish including the fact that spanish is a sexy sexy language) which in addition to all these wonderful benifits will also help u get over a hang up you seem to have had for a very long time.

All day MJ... people making fun becasue I was the only latino girl who didn't speak English..... I am sorry but this is worst than anything you experience......

So, when people make fun of you, just brush it off and think that other people are suffering the same or worst that moment......

I ignore and keep ignoring LOL

Yesi

Yesi, you just pretty much described EVERY immigrants' experience.  I've heard the SAME story from EVERYONE in my family ESPECIALLY my mother who was constantly ridiculed for her not being able to speak English.

HOWEVER, that experience taught me to NEVER make fun of people because they can't speak a certain language.

I guess McO's family and PL's family came from wherever they came from and the moment they landed in Canada/US, English words just flowed easily from their mouth!!!!

There are people NOW who have been in this country for years and don't speak English well.  El Pibe's mother speaks with an accent, MY mother speaks with an accent and kind of mixes her words but would anyone be so low as to make fun of them?

How would ANY member of foro feel if someone made fun of their loved ones for not being able to speak English??

Well hell, they should feel great right???  It's a compliment!!!

@GL:  I learned from the best, did I not??
Don't go pointing fingers.
And if making fun of someone is correcting them, then teachers in school should get fired!  I correct my mother all the time but I'm not making fun of her.  To patronize someone by saying, "Ok, now translate this in Spanish" knowing FULL well that I can't...............yeah, I thought so.

-- Edited by Motown Junkie at 11:40, 2007-02-09

No one mentioned YOUR family - no need for you to mention anyone else's family.

Teachers get paid for correcting students and help them along with their education - it's their job.  Firing would be stupid!  You - good intentions or not - do it and people may or may not mind it.

Have you thought that perhaps so much correcting some people may make THEM feel inferior / less educated than you?

Can that be interpreted as a form of putting someone down?

What was the phrase you used: "Some people put others down to make themselfs feel superior"?  and could that be applied to constant grammatical corrections on an open forum?

Is everyone you correct asking to be corrected or welcoming it with open arms?  Probably not; but you do it anyways and no one is beetching too much about it.  Someone made a comment about your spanish - I made ONE single follow up and it has become as if I told you and your family off.  You over reacted and perhaps McO is being smart about not arguing further with you.

McO

As for the bandwagon jumper:  Since GL was "INFAMOUS for her correcting "EVERYONE" Could you have jumped on GL's bandwagon of corrections?  So what if I jumped in many bandwagons - I am expressing myself freely.  If it happens that someone was already there and I am not the first.  Let it be considered jumping on the bandwagon - I don't care about that.

Unlike YOU, those I correct, I KNOW!!!!  I know how they will react.  If I don't know them, I won't say anything!!!!

Also, no one NEEDS to mention MY family but clearly my point is not getting through to ANYONE.  Since NO ONE can clearly fathom what I'm going through, I have to use family as an example.  EVERYONE can relate and everyone can sympathize to their own family who had difficulty in a new country.  I ask, "HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF PEOPLE MADE FUN OF A FAMILY MEMBER OF YOURS FOR NOT SPEAKING ENGLISH?" to let them TRULY realize that it f@cking SUCKS!!!!  And to have a family member be the butt of someone's joke would piss them off!!!  YES OR NO????

You can't POSSIBLY state that I jumped on to GL's Bandwagon because that was a constant  thing between her and I and we KNOW each other!!

You don't know ANY MEMBER OF FORO (which clearly is of debate at the moment).

You, apparently, don't know McO but you've been following him around like a dog in heat!!!!

I think you should learn Spanish because knowing another language is good for the above mentioned reasons (cultural self-actualization, job prospects, and many more good reasons to learn spanish including the fact that spanish is a sexy sexy language) which in addition to all these wonderful benifits will also help u get over a hang up you seem to have had for a very long time.

so much for "the solution man".

No one mentioned YOUR family - no need for you to mention anyone else's family.

Teachers get paid for correcting students and help them along with their education - it's their job. Firing would be stupid! You - good intentions or not - do it and people may or may not mind it.

Holy scheisse! We must be the same individual.

ETA: Please refer to me as Gringa Lahtina or Lahtina... at first I didn't know GL was actually refering to me.
