Answer my questions!!! Why are doctors/engineers working as hotel clerks??
What are you doing living here instead of GLORIOUS Cuba??!!!
Well your cat must be 90% patience and 10% fur.
Highly qualified people choose to work "instead" in sectors like the service industry because having a job in said service industry produces paycheques that, however comparatively tiny, do go well well beyond what a doctor or an engineer (who have no direct contact with the cash producing industry service) would earn per se. And in Cuba, you need that kind of choice if you want to live with any economical peace of mind.
I was given the choice to live here. For the time being, I am glad that I chose to do so.
For some reason, you keep assuming that, because I point out how irrelevant Fidel's death is for the future of Cuba and cubans, how misguided is to assume that Fidel's death is going to make ANY difference that cubans-on-the-ground won't bother to make, then, somehow, I must be some kind of communist enthusiast. Or even a Fidel enthusiast. I am neither.
But it was this same kind of shallow reasoning what led iraquis to put down Saddam like the mad dog he was -and to party accordingly. The one thing they accomplished, besides catering to the worst insticts -even religious, ideological worst instincts- of whichever faction it was that carried the day with his hanging, was to inflamate even further a national messup that started long before we bother to remember and, certainly, long before Fidel, I mean, Saddam went on stage.
The simmilarities with Cuba are none of my making.
What you're doing is ASSUMING that I'm ASSUMING!!!
I've already said it and I'm going to say it again..........I believe that Fidel's death will change NOTHING in Cuba.
I think that Cuba is a HUGE waste of opportunity. WHERE is the LOGIC in studying your ass off to be a doctor and then working at a hotel because you make reasonably more money and the whole "doctor" thing is a "safety net"????
You sound exactly like that genius Danny who praises back home as if it's the greatest thing since sliced bread yet is planted right here in good ol' Canada!!!!
Must be a genius indeed that Danny for you to keep him so ever present.
The logic behind cuban doctors working in hotels is that well qualified people see themselves forced by circumstances (please refer to message above) to take up jobs with a much lower level of professional satisfaction but also with much larger pay cheques than their former job's.
The circunstances in Cuba are explained as a disfunctional economy and a centralized -and equally disfunctional- rendering of all public services.
The circunstances (how many times are you going to spell "Circumstances" like that?) in Canada -wherewell qualified immigrants see themselves forced by circumstances (it takes a long time, if ever, to have their degrees recognized here) to take up jobs with a much lower level of professional satisfaction but also with some kind of salary- are explained as... well, you can tell me yourself. I've been around here only for so long.
Now, if you'd bear with me on this one... when you say that I "praise back home as if it's the greatest thing since sliced bread"...aren't you assuming what I am asking you not to assume, which you claim not to be assuming, and yet you obviously are?(And you say you're not a smart ass?)
Are you really paying any attention to what you type? Speak for yourself.
Is your cat THIS patient?
Actually, do you ever do THIS to your cat?
First of all, call my boyfriend a dumb ass all you want but don't talk about my cat. Only I can talk about him!!!
And if we must do comparisons, my cat is f@cking Einstein compared to you.
Are you ever going to explain to me why the particular dentist I went to was only for tourists? Was he too good for Cubans?
Whatever. Your comparisions sound like this, "Well, I could've driven a Ferrari but I chose a Honda Civic!!!" You CHOSE to live here in Canada and yet.......perhaps you should go back to Cuba!!!! Make that 30 years another 30, 40, 50! Do Canada a favour!!!

O is this -yet- another uninformed discussion about Cuba?
Somebody ACTUALLY posting from there? Cuba, that is?
If not... why do you bother? Half of you have no idea what you are talking about, and the other half is simply beating a dead old horse. No pun intended.
Last time I checked (just to give you an example) two hundred thousand people from VERY democratic countries in Latin America had made it to Habana to have their eyesight restored. For free. Because they could neither pay for it in their own -very democratic- country nor travel to the USA, the other option available in most cases.
Believe me, there's much more to "Cuba before and after Fidel" than what could ever represent a bunch of unresigned immigrants in Florida USA (a land of known prestige for its... ajem, democratic virtues) pretending to have fun over the death of a guy who survived around a dozen of USA presidents and whom, with merits and defects, still comands the respect and appreciation among the people of his country that VERY FEW, however democratic, Latin American presidents can say they do.
Now, aside from the rant... whether he's dead or alive stopped being relevant since a couple of months ago. The new rulers are already in place, and if any change at all is to come, it will all look pretty much like China: vive la economie, but the communist party still rules.
Why don't you take your foot out of your mouth?! It might do you well.
The ONLY reason why I posted this was not to start a "communist" debate nor did it have to do with the relevance of whether he's dead or not. It was merely a joke to the person who told me this "breaking news" on Saturday night.
If Confu and El Duro wanted to duke it out, fine, by all means, but there was really no need for your high and mighty a$$ to get involved.
1. Are you from Cuba??? That you can go around talking like this, making it seem that you are the only person on the planet that knows what is going on in Cuba!!!
2. Fidel survived over a dozen Presidents ... hey smart ass, in the US presidents are allowed to be in office for a four year term, then they must another election, if they get voted into office they get a second four year term, which aftet that in a DEMOCRATIC country, they must leave the office.
3. "Still comands the respect ... " ... More than half of that country hates him, but are too afraid of what will happen to them if they speak out. Yeah, theres a place I want to live
-- Edited by El Pibe at 09:14, 2007-01-30
1. Yes, I am, as a matter of fact.
No, I am not making it seem as if I am the only person on the planet etc etc.
It is evident that half of you have no idea what you are talking about.
At least, half of you.
2. Now you are just getting all ****y.
Other than that… you mean, you seriously consider the ol’ USA to be a democratic country?
3. Soooo, you mean that, after 47 years, HALF the population HATES Fidel but, since they are afraid of what could the government do to them (mind you, to the HALF the POPULATION we were talking about before) they do nothing instead? You mean that’s all there is, fear?
It all makes sense. I mean, that you should see things this way.
I never said I wanted to live there. Don’t see your point in pretending you would.
Besides, with your logic and such short a fuse, you wouldn’t last 2 days down there.
Dumb ass.
First of all, don't call him a dumb ass!!! You don't know him to say that. If there's anyone who's a dumb ass, it's you for even insulting someone like that in the first place! Resorting to third grade antics isn't the greatest defence.
Now enlighten us, with all of their OPTIONS, what can Cubans possibly do to excercise their "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" or to voice their dismay??!!!
Hey you (or him) call me a smart ass, I'll call you (or him) a dumbass.
Why the surprise?
As for cubans and their choices for exercising their "freedom of speech" and "voice their dismay", no, there isn't any constitutionally, effectively protected way to ensure that.
(Would you care to notice that I never said anything to the contrary?)
That doesn't mean that partying over a dead body is going to make things any better.
Look at Iraq.
That doesn't mean that having Fidel dead is going to change things in Cuba, in any substantial way.
Do you think things have changed since he rescinded power in December last year? Ok, granted, no more endless speeches on the tele, but little else.
I never called you a smart ass!!! The word "smart" doesn't apply to you.
What it comes down to is this, you NOT being a Cuban, you NOT living in a Communist country, you only speaking on YOUR behalf and NOT A CUBAN him/herself makes your comments this:
Sure, you didn't. But El Pibe did. You called me out on that. And I told you why I had said it.
Got it now?
C'mon, I never claimed to be smart! It was El Pibe who chose to call me "smart". He actually called me "smart ass", that's true... but hey, don't blame me for self infatuation.
Now, I am not sure you are actually reading the postings. Not mines, anyways.
Yes I am a Cuban. I've lived in Cuba for the past 30 years and I go back every now and then.
Sure I am only speaking on my behalf. And it was on my behalf that I said that half of you has no idea what Cuba is all about and, still, bother to muse over the death of Fidel as some sort of "magic event" which will change everything down there.
It won't.
As someone pointed out before (okei, it was probably a joke as well) apparently there's too much CNN-like material behind the arguments (or jokes, who knows for sure this far down the road) of the half of posters that doesn't seem to know squat about Cuba and still bother to talk about it as if they did.
Last, but not least, I am sorry for having helped dragging your joke for so long. I didn't even realize it was a joke, would you believe.
-- Edited by go_fish at 11:10, 2007-01-30
And why are you not there now??? Living there permanently? Why did you leave in the first place?
I don't think any of us are in the dark when it comes to what will happen to Cuba once Fidel passes. Nothing will change.
If they want to party over his death, there must be a reason but I'm not one to say whether they should or shouldn't. Do I agree with it? Nope but again, they must have a valid reason.
I also wasn't impressed with the fact that there was a doctor and an engineer working at the front desk of my hotel. When I chipped my tooth there, I enjoyed the idea that I'd be going to an excellent dentist (afterall, Cuba does have the best) however I was dismayed to find out that the facility was for international tourists ONLY.
I'm all for equality but give me a break.
If having lived in Cuba for the last 30 years is seemingly not -for you, anyways- long enough as for having a general idea of what's going on down there, then nothing will.
Now, about your experiences in Cuba... are you sure that you even NOTICED that highly qualified people in Cuba -like, doctors and engineers- see themselves forced to, sometimes, take -less paid, less socially recognized- jobs like... hotel desk personnel? Or cab driver? Or cafeterias and the like? (ANSWER THIS QUESTION YOURSELF!!!!!!!)
I thought Canada would have gotten you used to that by now. Particularly as doctors and engineers here in Canada DO see the difference in their earnings when switching from the hotel desk to the hospital or the design lab.
O and there are reasons why some people in Miami are talking about partying. One that comes to mind is, because "partying" is the only thing most of them will have ever done directly aimed against Fidel's ruling of Cuba. That, and surrounding Elian relatives' home with (hysterical) people, placards, candles and cameras.
Seriously, this is becoming just as informative as having a conversation with my cat!!!

I thought Canada would have gotten you used to that by now. Particularly as doctors and engineers here in Canada DO see the difference in their earnings when switching from the hotel desk to the hospital or the design lab.
O and there are reasons why some people in Miami are talking about partying. One that comes to mind is, because "partying" is the only thing most of them will have ever done directly aimed against Fidel's ruling of Cuba. That, and surrounding Elian relatives' home with (hysterical) people, placards, candles and cameras.
And, as for "Fidel big bad Cuba"... never mind. You went there, got ripped off on a continous basis since landing time and, still, never actually got it.
As for the USA being "a bit more democratic" than Cuba... sure, man, whatever. Particularly as we can all see what little impact that lack of democracy in the USA brings about and, in contrast, what massive, gargantuan disasters, at a world-wide level, is the current cuban dictatorship bringing about.
As for having to get a visa to visit my own country... well, it's stuff like that what makes you an active and important part of that half of posters who, when it comes to Cuba's near future, have no idea what they are talking about.
Up yours?
Aren't you creative?
To yawn for!
Don't make me laugh, they tried numerous times to rip me off, and I busted them each an every time. I know I don't look like a typical latin person, I look more like a white boy, as they tried to rip me off, and I would politely smile, then speak to them in spanish and told them that no one was going to get ripped off, the looks on their faces was priceless. So yeah I never really got it
Then it's a good thing you did your own research eh?.....

WHY NOT???? CUBANS DESERVE TO PARTY ON HIS DEATH.........MY ONLY THING IS WAT WILL HAPPEN TO CUBA ONCE HE DIES!!!
why..
HAVE U EVER BEEN TO CUBA?? LIKE CUBA CUBA?? THIS PPL ARE FRIGEEN 3 DECADES BACK.....IN EVERYTHING.......ALL OF THEM HAVE TO SNEAK AROUND IN ORDER TO GET BY!!!!
I'VE BEEN TO CUBA AND YEAH, THEY ARE 3 DECADES BK BUT NOBODY IS DYING OF HUNGER IN CUBA. EVERYONE IS EDUCATED AND I DIDN'T MEET ANY KIDS OR ADULTS THAT COULDN'T READ OR WRITE. ON TOP OF THAT FIDEL ALLOWS PEOPLE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES TO GO TO CUBA TO STUDY MEDICINE. I ALSO MET IN ECUADOR THE BEST DOCTOR FOR CANCER TREATMENT AND HE TOLD ME THAT FIDEL FLEW A FEW PEOPLE TO ECUADOR TO GO UNDER HIS TREATMENT. FIDEL CARES FOR THE PEOPLE. JUST DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE DOESN'T ALLOW LUXURIES DOESN'T MEAN HE IS BAD. HE HAS THEM UNDER CONTROL BECAUSE EVERY BUSINESS OR COMMAND NEEDS A TOUGH HAND TO RULE OR YOU SEE THE CROWD STEP OVER YOU. I LIVED IN A CUBAN'S HOUSE WITH THEM FOR 2 WEEKS AND THEY DON'T SEEM TO HAVE A BAD LIFE EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT THEY WANT LUXURIES LIKE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THEY SEE. I PREFER TO SEE THAT; THEN SEE LITTLE KIDS IN ECUADOR DYING OF HUNGER. I MET FARMERS THAT DONT KNOW HOW TO READ OR WRITE. THEIR KIDS DIE CAUSE THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO TAKE THEM TO THE DOCTOR OR BUY MEDICINE. TO ME ANYONE THAT STANDS TO THE GARBAGE AND EXPLOITATION THAT THE U.S. DOES IS A RESPECTED PERSON IN MY LIST. I RESPECT FIDEL ALTHOUGH IT WILL GO AGAINST MY DOINGS OF MAKING MONEY AND LIVING IN CUBA WILL MEAN I HAVE NOTHING BUT EQUALITY TO EVERY OTHER CUBAN. I SAY "LONG LIVE FIDEL" AND LET THE AMERICAS RISE UP TO THE U.S.

Then it's a good thing you did your own research eh?.....

Oh I am sorry I didn't get the joke at the time.
Not that I get it any better now, but I'm only saying.
High and mighty ass? What do YOU know?
So if I don't LOL (or anything else with a smiley) at this kind of "jokes" and, on top of that, I try to say what I think, without offending anyone (I am sorry, but half of you does not have any idea of what's going on in Cuba) all I get is being profiled as some sort of pro-Fidel die hard enthusiast?
Gee, kinda makes me wonder about all those good things some of you said you'd learned to appreciate about living in Canada.
Unless you've actually lived in Cuba yourself and experienced their lifestyle, then YOU shouldn't be saying anything at all either.
Again I ask, what OPTIONS do Cubans have to excersize their FREEDOM OF SPEECH and to voice their dismay?

bro u took the words right out of my mouth.......
I have talked to cubans that have told me that they don't know any different because thats all they have been exposed to, like u say they run the risk of being killed they actually have cubas that work for the goverment that as soon as they see or hear that someone is doing/thinking different they get removed. A friend of mine would talk just like our friend here go_fish, till she went to live in cuba, when she came back her views about him had totally change.........
so with all that i can't wait for this loser to die!!!!
