Derogatory, yes. but racist, I don't think so. You can't follow ALL media, so I'm pretty use a white person has been labelled a thug at some point or another. I'm sure the word thug is now just a universal term for punks or gangstas.
This topic was discussed on the fan 590 last night. The topic of the word "thug" used as a hidden racial slur was discussed. It came up as they were discussing some legal problems that some football player got into last week. Too make a long story short the hosts brought up the fact that when the media speaks of Black and Latino's involved in some kind of criminal activities they are labelled thugs as if they are really trying to call them the N word or Wetbacks/spics that they call Latinos.
Then the host asked the question "have you ever heard anyone in the media call someone white a thug? If the columbine killers were black/latino would they have been painted as thugs by the media instead of emotionally unstable kids?"
What's your opinion on this?
As for me I would have to agree with him a bit. I can't speak for all the media, but I have heard reporters mention the word "thug" and when they do it's with a look of disgust. Just my opinion.
