If your fido phone is unlocked you can buy a pay-as-you-go sim card in Ecuador and pop it in the phone. That would give you access to a local number plus usage of the phone at local rates (calling back to canada would be long distance at whatever the rate over there is) the good thing is that in most of Latin America incoming calls are free so people can call u and it doesnt cost you anything off your prepaid card.

How to know if your phone is unlocked: If you got it from Fido or Rogers and you havent gone to Pacific mall (or any other comparably shady mall) to get it unlocked than its not. If your phone came from outside Canada its prob unlocked. If you're with Bell or Telus you're SOL so dont even ask.

THNX 4 DA INFO BRO. I GUESS IF I CHANGE THE SIM CARD I WILL HAVE A LOCAL NUMBER IN ECUADOR. I NEED TO RECEIVE CALLS ON MY CANADIAN CELL NUMBER. I THINK I'M GOING TO CHECK MM'S LINK, IF I CAN FORWARD THE NUMBER IT WILL BE AWESOME!!!!

No problem. Remember that for the VOIP option to work you need to have a high speed internet connection in Ecuador.

Pacific Mall shady??? why that's the most ludicrous, absurd, racially biased, unfounded statement anyone has ever made on foro.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get my phone unlocked... for testing purposes.

Which store exactly?

I also HATE cell roaming charges, they are insane amounts.

I went to the states and my bill was insane, I had to pay canadian roaming & states roaming + the minutes. The roaming charges were higher then the actual minutes I used, it was sooo bad.

I heard that u can buy a cell that can only make out going calls & that u can call anywhere & talk 4ever and it's free, all u need is to buy this watever phone & it's basically stealing the line or somethin like that.

Has anyone else heard of this??

Do VoIP services offer call forwarding at low rates? If so, check them out too.

I did a quick search and it looks like people are looking for the same:

link

Although they use tech language than i can't figure out.

DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY OTHER WAY TO USE UR CELL IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY ROAMING CHARGES. FIDO CHARGES 3.50/MIN. FROM ECUADOR. MY FRIEND SAID SOMETHING ABOUT BEING ABLE TO USE UR CELL AND ONLY PAYING UR REGULAR PHONE USAGE AS OPPOSE TO ROAMING FEES??? DOES ANYONE KNOW WT HE IS TALKING ABOUT????

I know in Ecuador you can rent cell phones. My cousin does this when he travels. The rental fee is like $20US and you pay like 5 cents a minute.
I would look into that if I were you. I don't know how it would work in other countries.

IS THIS FOR LOCAL CALLING??? I NEED TO BE ABLE TO RECEIVE CALLS FROM HERE!!! I'M NOT WORRY ABOUT CALLING THERE. I'LL JUST BUY A PHONE THERE. IS DA CALLS THAT I'M EXPECTING FROM HERE DAT I NEED TO ANSWER IN ECUADOR. I WILL BE EXPECTING CALLS AND 3.50/MIN. IS RIDICULOUS!!!!
