this completely comes down to trust. If you see your "significant other" buying gifts for someone of the opposite sex, it would be stupid for me to get all irrational without me knowing or understanding who he is buying it for. He could easily say, I'm buying this for so and so (aka mother, sister or even say me). I would say Ok and move on with my life. NOW, if I never see these things on said mother, sister or myself, then another discussion would have to take place.
SO, if I find out he bought if for Juana from next door and they're hanging out a bit too much, then ya, there is cause for concern and trust would definitely be out the window.
