Bistor, I think it goes beyond an atmosphric phenomenom. The mayan had several calendars, I beleive they had a yearly calendar, based on 365 days; another which I forgot, and the last one who represents the year of the whole galaxy (via Lactea). I beleive the 2012 represents the end of a galaxy year. They used to say that whatever men had made will turn against their masters, (things like tools, etc).
Quetzalcoatl was basically exiled by his nemesis(whose name I don't recall; Quetzalcoatl was against human sacrifices.
Some ancient hebrews also offered children into sacrifices.
Lately it seems like discoveries are made more often by accident than by research. While these discoveries are valuable to us and historians, they also bring risks and disruptions. Archaelogical digs are an expensive and time consuming propositions that involve the government and attracts looters.
Lahtina - Regarding the historical sites in the Middle East, I agree that it is a shame. Some countries have no regard for historical sites when it comes to war. I don't know if this is in violation of any war doctrates but there certainly is no need for such tactics. That brings to mind the irony of the internation 'laws of war' that have been developed over the years. War is barbaric yet there are attempts to civilize it. I find it a bit odd. But that is another topic altogether.
Fantito - The Mayans certainly believed in cycles but chances are that 2012 just represents an astrological phenomen. We'll have to wait and see. Stock up on canned foods just in case.
thats some cool stuff..........i find it weird that a lot more of the Aztec civilization is found more often, they where very big in there time and had temples all around.....i know that most of it got destroyed but sitll........
anyways I'm sure a lot of it ends up in the black market
Quetzalcoatl is coming soon. We are very close to 2012, the end of a period of the mayan calendar in which serious changes were predicted to happen such as environment changes in temperature, rain patterns ,etc.
Bueno ,pero eso es otra cosa. jejeje; Oh sera otro signo?
This is already happening no???
I finally came into foro to see what is going on and I found this thread. Pretty cool.

Yay!! If I got granted one wish ... bluhrhrhrhr :shakes head, clears throat, composes herself: If I were granted one wish, it would be to go back in time and see the Tenochtitlan that the Spanish conquistadores saw.
Question... does anyone care about these archaeological treasures? It doesn't seem like it. In 2001 (or sometime around there) the Taliban destroyed the monumental Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan, world friggin' archaeological heritage dating back from the early centuries of the common era. The war in Iraq (ancient Mesopotamia) could very well be destroying important archaeological and anthropological relics. Anyway... next!
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican archeologists have made the most significant Aztec find in decades, unearthing a 15th century altar and a huge stone slab at a ruined temple in the throbbing heart of Mexico City.
The works were uncovered last weekend at the Aztec empire's main Templo Mayor temple, near the central Zocalo square, which was used for worship and human sacrifice
It was the most meaningful find since electricity workers stumbled upon an eight-tonne carving of an Aztec goddess at the same site in 1978.
"It is a very important discovery, the biggest we have made in 28 years. It will allow us to find out a lot more," Mexico City's mayor, Alejandro Encinas, said on Wednesday
