I'll think of more

Exactly, Pablo Escobar shouldn’t be named in this thread.

I have in mind famous Colombian people that have contributed, positively.

Manuel Elkin Patarroyo: Developed the world’s first safe and effective malaria vaccine.

Fernando Botero: Amazing painter and sculptor

Pablo Escobar wasnt as bad as people made him out to be.  He was even considered by some the way Eva Peron was considered in Argentina.

I agree with the other famous Colombians.  Cant forget Shakira, she is the pretty much the only Colombian artist that has hit international status.

@Buffy - Silvio Rodriguez, that man is amazing.

I have heard many times the same statement based on Pablo Escobar “generosity “ which I just consider a false image of Robyn Hood.

He was giving money to poor people just to get back their help, hiding and protecting him from the authorities. On the contrary, Eva Peron was a real altruistic human being; she used her power to help poor people with serious problems as the lack of a health care system for everybody, and she supported women in their right to vote.

I don’t know who can compare Eva Peron with a Psycho as Pablo Escobar, who killed and injured thousands of innocents Colombians.

@ Trucho: Agree with all your choices except Julio Iglesias, who's not Latino and who's arguably not famous in the light of all these other people. Okay, I just don't like him. Shoot me.

Now, as per the topic, off the top of my head:
Rigoberta Menchú - guatemalteca, winner of the Nobel peace prize, indigenous woman, fighting for the freedom of her people.
Silvio Rodriguez: Trobador cubano.
Lupe Ledesma: Real estate agent.
Doña Florinda: Famous mexican comedian.

I'll think of more later. I should add some famous latin men as well.

Well, I think Julio Iglesias is latino, though he's not latin american.

Actually, latino used to refer to people who speak italian, spanish, french, and portuguese since these languages derived from Latin.

Anyways, lately we latin american are being called "latinos", too bad since there's nothing about americans as in latin americans.  We are americans too, don't forget!

Well, I think the famosos should at least be "people", but I know where you're going with this. You just want to bring up another famous argentino: Topo Giggio.

I knew we discussed this before...

You don't have to be "clean" to make a diff in history (I know, different topic)

Well, DM did make a diff in soccer history.. I think

you only say that bc he wears the same shirt/flag as you................ i'll pick pele for a better choice i think

No one had brought up Pele, and I wasn't comparing, but I think Pele changed the game just as much
In different times though

Lately I've been watching alot of documentaries on Ernesto Guevara and of Pablo Escobar Gaviria. Boring yes, but very educational.

Can you name Famous/Important people in Latin American History.... and state what they are famous for...

for example..... Neruda was important for his literature, he was from Chile

get it?
