I think I was 9 or 10 or maybe less,. well my mom was a single mom and I was the older than my sister (my oldest sister lived with my grandma) ,. so we both stayed at home,. doing homework, etc,. my mom used to leave us food,. so we can come and eat,. until she or my uncle got home,. I think it all depends in the level of maturity ,..
Wow i can't remember when i got keys, all I know is that I never probably needed them since my dad would drive me to school & pick me up every single day until I finsih high school.
When I went to college a got a car & that was the end of my dad driving me every where, by then i had my own keys as well.

For the early home-stayers....I think it depends a lot on the situation (Ex. single mother) and very much on the level of maturity......some kids become more conscience at an early age.....some kids are just troublesome by nature.....
It North America with Single parents working all the time, you have no choice but to depend on your young children from an early age (right or wrong, legal or illegal).....you have no other choice....especially financially......
I always had extra activites after school so by the time I came home at night, my parents were already home.....so I had keys for back up only....and I never needed to use them......

I was 9, but then they took away cause I kept on losing it. So my dad told me to keep it in the garage, in a "secret spot" so I wouldn't lose it any more.

LOL, that's funny.
Sorry my bed is already full and I don't have extra room, plus I don't know if I will leave you the keys

I was also 9. Mom would leave lunch in the "frigidaire" and I'd spend some time alone in the house. Sometimes my sister would be around but she was "older" (TWO years older... meh!) enough as for not HAVING to.
Not that it did not bring its own share of problems. A ketchup bottle battle between my sis and myself comes to mind
you think its wrong why?? I was 7yrs old when i was given the house key being that my mother was a single mom raising three kids! I had to take the bus home with my brother i dropped us off at the foot of our building then i would go by the babysitters pick up the little guy and head upstairs to the apartment we would be home alone for about two hours She would leave food for us made and we did our homework she would come home make dinner and done!
Yes i did grow up fast and learned to be independent but i think that only helped me become more on my own!
I think it's a LOT of responsibility for a 7 year old - - - and a LOT can go wrong with kids that little being on their own, even if it is for short periods of time - TWO HOURS is a lot of time for LITTLE CHILDREN to be alone. With all the stories of pedophiles and possible accidents that can happen with unsupervised children, I personally would not do that.
Totally agree. I grew up fast too, but I don't think I was responsible enough to take care of my self or others at age 6 or 7. Couldn't agree more. That's too young. Thank the lord that nothing ever happened to you, with all the things that you see nowadays. But I've seen many, many cases like that, just not in Canada. Personally, I'm paranoid and would never, ever, ever do that. I think legally you can start leaving a kid alone or in charge of siblings at age 12, and only for a limited time (two hours or so).
I was like 11 or 12, but there were some kids at my school that were like 6 and 7 years old and home alone. I think that is wrong
How about you guys? How old were you when you parents decided it was good for you to stay home alone?

Actually until I was 18 I'd always go to school and come back with my older brother. He had all the responsibilities. I just chilled and became a follower
