Debit / credit card skimming culprits have developed new technologies for skimming card data while at the same time capturing PIN numbers.
Pinhole cameras are no longer required to capture PIN numbers.
On July 13, 2006, the manager of the Rainbow Esso Gas Station, located at 2688 Dundas Street West, Mississauga, discovered a new skimming device on one of the stations pumps. A device/chip had been inserted into the pump’s card reader to capture the card information. At the same time a gel pad overlay had been placed on top of the pumps number pad to capture the PIN number. This gel pad overlay appeared so genuine that it was only discovered during the subsequent maintenance on the pump. The technician dispatched to dismantle the reader system, discovered that the gel pad, noting it had a softer texture than normal.
This particular Esso station is closed between midnight and 6 am. It is believed that the devices were installed at some point during this time period.
This is the first time that this technology has been discovered in use, in the GTA.
