I think it goes like this:

In Jewish customs and i mean orthodox jews they have the brides mother and the grooms mother present on there wedding night! if she does not bleed then the groom has every right to divorce here right there and there must also be a white sheet between them to verify that she indeed did bleed! So I can see how maybe back in the day they did have this law and never got rid of it!
