I don't think Zidane chicken out to take a penalty shot he is one of the calmest pearson to take one, and i don't think it would have matter who was the goalie, yes it very hard to take one penalty let alone two, but i think he would have put it in no matter what.... plus his name is not Parlemo.. ex argentina player who miss three penalty shots in on game against colombia

The World Cup may be over, but the investigation into an ugly head-butting incident by the tournament's best player is just beginning.

FIFA, soccer's world governing body, will open a disciplinary investigation into French midfielder Zinedine Zidane's actions against Italian Marco Materazzi in Sunday's World Cup final.
Zidane, who was awarded the Golden Ball as the World Cup's most valuable player, was red-carded for head-butting Materazzi late in the match.
FIFA said Tuesday that the game's fourth official witnessed the incident - without the use of a television monitor - and alerted head referee Horacio Elizondo through his headset.
Television replays show Zidane and Materazzi exchanging words after Italy broke up a French attack in extra time of Sunday's final in Berlin. Seconds later, Zidane turned to face Materazzi, lowered his head and rammed Materazzi in the chest, knocking the Italian player to the ground.
Zidane was sent off, forcing France to play the rest of the match with 10 men. Italy won in a penalty shootout.
Probe FIFA protocol
Investigations of this nature are protocol whenever a red card is handed out in an international match to determine how the player, and any others who may be involved, should be punished, FIFA said.
FIFA did not comment on whether Materazzi was also being investigated for his role in the incident.
The 32-year-old Inter Milan player admitted that he insulted Zidane before the head-butting, but denied calling the French captain a "terrorist" as many media outlets have speculated.
"I did insult him, it's true," Materazzi said in Tuesday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "But I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I'm not cultured and I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is."
He would not expand on what he said to Zidane, saying his comment was just a common insult players hear all the time.

I have no response for the above comment, I just thought it was a QEF moment.
Actually Michael Jordan was one of the NBA's biggest trash talkers ever. You'd be surprised what they say to each other during a game to break their focus.
I think Daeveed has a point, who wants to go down in history as the guy who missed a cup winning penalty kick? I'd rather be remembered for that wicked headbutt to the dumbass Italian who insulted my sister.

Really, we for sure never met the same kind.

Let's think about this. You are the best player in the world, playing your last game on a World Cup final. You scored the first goal by penalty kick, against the best goalie of the world. Now it's the second half of overtime...the game is still tied, you have just missed an incredible goal opportunity, which the goalie saved... the game will surely be decided on penalty kicks. You are certainly one of the designated shooters...you've already faced the goalie, and scored by shooting a very well positioned penalty kick, that almost didn't go in. You desire to retire on top, with all the glory...you want to be remembered....but there are good chances that this time your shot won't go in, either because the goalie will save it, or because the ball will not hit the net in your effort to position it as far away from the goalie as possible. What to do, you don't want to be remembered as the guy who missed the decisive penalty kick, and lost the final..... I think Zidane saw no other better way out than the expulsion from the game, he has heard all kinds of trash talk in his career. He retired in controversy, but not as a loser....very smart if that's the case. Discuss.

I do...and actually a couple of friends mentioned him when i told them what i thought... there's also a Chilean player who's remembered for the exact same thing, even thought he's one of the greatest chilean players (oxymoron i know).
Yes, butI can't help but to think that if he had asked his coach not to include him...he would have been remembered as a chicken...if he had missed his penalty kick...he would have been remembered for that. however, just like the Cantona and Maradona examples you gave, he will be remembered mostly as a great player, who got expelled from his last game, but not as the one who chickened out. Anyway...I hope this investigation sheds more light in the matter, although i doubt that my theory would get acceptance...it's just a theory.
Noooo!! That would never happen. Does everyone remember Roberto Baggio as the team captain who missed his penalty shot in the shootout for the World Cup in 1994?
Daveed, I like your theory but on the other hand I think it was an issue of uncontainable anger. Zidane is a player known to "just take it." Chopped, pulled, pushed etc. He just takes it. Some times there is just so much a person can take. If he wanted to avoid the penalty kick he could of explained to the coach not to choose him for the shot. Whatever was said to Zidane must have been extreme in order for him to act out like that. We will find out what was said to him in the next couple of days. I know that Zidane should have not reacted in that matter but the media and so-called fans are making a big deal out of this. If you look at the mans career, the plays and gols that he has contributed to futbol over the years, is much greater then this one incident. People need to let it go. Eric Cantona fly kicked a fan in the stands and is still recognized as a great player and is a part of futbols most popular commercial "Joga Bonito" Diego Maradona was addicted to Cocaine but people still know him as the Best or one of the best players that have ever lived.

I think he chickened out.
Highly unlikely. Have u seen the serenity with which he approaches the penalty shots?
I'm sure there's just a simple reason behind this outburst. As a person constantly on the edgy side I think that maybe he was just edgy because he was tired after running for over two hours, ya think? I dunno.

But with all his experience don't you think he's heard it all??...and even if he was offended, again with all his experience...don't you think he would have been a little more discreet if he didn't want to get himself expelled from the game?
Im sure hes heard it all and more, But sometimes Daeveed even the most patient person can only take so much before the kettle boils over! I mean im sure he could of gone about it differently and im sure he regrets it but in the Heat of the Moment do you really stop and think it thru nope u just react its the animal instinct in us all! He was probably pushed to the point that he just went off! I am at no moment stating it was right on the contraray it was completely uncalled for!

Well is not the first time he has been in the situation though, bueno I hope it was cause of that... I never been a big fan of him but he is good n is sad 2 see that.
