Car auctions are good. You can get some sweet deals, invest a bit in fixing it up, and its a way better deal then going thru the Auto Trader and stuff.

If you know anybody who's a dealer (of cars), try to go to the auctions, I've heard they're the best source for good cheap cars. Only licensed dealers are authorized to bid though.
It depends on the auction/place... some are open to the PUBLIC. I've bought my 2 previous cars at an Auction place there used to be on Milvan Dr./Finch Ave. are... but they closed down... so I am looking for a new / different auction place that may be open to the public.
