I think Danny is kinda touching the real reason here.

Marketing.

"DJ" makes any name much more marketable.

I think all bands should have those titles. I was thinking the other day, that for example, I like Coldplay but the only person I would recognize on the street is the singer Chris Martin (because he'd be with Gwyneth ). The drummer is somewhat recognizable but really the guitarists could be replaced without anyone noticing.

Hell, I can only remember the singer of Gardenias.

The name is just being used for Promo.....

On a flyer you need to put DJ noseque......

Of course once you get there, you see the guy with the headphones, playing music....and you'll know HE's the DJ....but how will you know his actual name?

As far as producer...etc...only the BEST stand out.....like with artist as well.....no need for the miss, mr, dj, dr.  etc.....you say Madonna and people know....you say Prince and people know....

With DJ's ....unless they are famous.....worldwide....they still need the title DJ there to show status......EX: Kid Capri, Tiesto, Tony Touch.....

Everyone knows those are DJ's.....there's no need to define them....they have already made a name for themselves.....

The abbreviation DJ.....is just a noted respect thing....

Nor can I answer your question.

But if I must guess, it probably goes back to the early days of Rap where you'd have MC's and DJ's who had to state what they did when they were on stage or performing. Sort of like answering the question before it was asked.

Maybe their first name isn't 'cool' enough, so they replace it with DJ, and with it makes any last name after it the "sh*T"...i guess. For example: the lastname Lastimaquenotengonombremejor sounds boring by itself, but add a dash of DJ and you get DJ Lastimaquenotengonombremejor! that's instant pizzaz! Mad props!

now that's a classy DJ name....

There's a hiphop duo in Chile called "Los Hermanos Brothers". It is integrated by DJ Diskjockey and MC Maestro de Ceremonias. I'm not kidding.
