Some basques are separatist and don't consider themselves spanish, and others (the majority) aren't separatist and are quite comfortable being spanish. There is as much discrimination against them there, as there is here discrimination against the quebecois in Canada.

Historically speaking, far from being discriminated, they have played a privileged role in the administration of Spain (this goes back to the idea of hidalguía). For those that have read 'Don Quixote', there is a character in it (el vizacaíno) that gives us an idea of how they were stereotyped in XVI century.

Miel, discrimination on the basis of hidalguía or blood purity, in Spain is looooong gone. I assure you.

Discrimination against recent inmigrants is another matter. It exists, just as it exists in Canada. I mentioned those two types of discrimination criteria as an example of something that was done in the past, and isn't done today, because the spanish, today, feel it is unacceptable.

The day latinamericans feel discrimination on the basis of skin colour, against their brothers and sisters (literally) is unacceptable, it will disappear.

I understand your point,. but still you will know being Español what happens in your country,. but you mentioned hidalguìa (for me blood purity is part of hidalguia but can not be considered the same),. and I think probably there is still a little bit of it,. probably not at the same level as two cneturies ago,.because for me hidalguia is not only withing your own race but others as well,. I might be mistaken,. but I completely understand and agree with your post,. specially the last comment.

No, those two ideas have been gone for a very long time (fortunately).

The notion of hidalguía was to separate "cristianos viejos" from northern spain, from recent converts from islam and judaism in a country that was itself a product of continuous war since the VIII century. The last moorish kingdom in Granada was conquered in 1492, and Navarre was conquered in 1512. The conquest of america was simply a continuation of the same process (Cuba 1510, Mexico 1521, Peru 1531, etc.).

To try to use any idea of "blood purity" today wouldn't make any sense... all spaniards descend from people that at some point were moslem or jewish. We are a nation of mestizos.

Today, spaniards from northern Spain don't wield any more influence than those from the south, and blue eyes certainly won't guarantee you a government job.

Canadians call the people of the United States americans.

They consider Canada and the U.S as North America, based on economical and social similarities.

Most of them consider Mexico as a latin american country, eventhough they are included into the North American free trade.

Most of them don't know much about individual countries, they tend to think we are the same people that speak the same language and have a commom spanish native history.

And some just think that latin american countries are filled with the descendents of spaniards.

Comparing central americans with south americans is a very difficult tasks since..even countries such as Bolivia and Argentina have different history, economy, etc.

I know that countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador have cultural similarities because they share ancient language such as Nahuatl and Maya -Quiche, and others.

As well corn based food.

All I can say is that Pupusa rocks, we enjoy it quietly and share it with whoever wants to try it.

Regardless I just think that Bistor made a comment based on his opinion or upbringing as you say....JUST like you did with your comment.....the discussion has not gone downhill......You both are obviously passionate about what you're saying.....and speak from "experience"......

I do agree though that "we're all products of history"

With a foro that has more than 95% Latin Americans....how many are actually going to come on here and "disagree" with you....or better yet...give ANOTHER point of view.....

There is no discussion with only 1 opinion present....(so, I think)

Bistor being Español can actually tell you where he comes from....HIS point of view....it doesn't mean that one of you is wrong or right.....

History took place and it changed the future for all of us in one way or another.....it's how we try and deal with it now that should count....as hard and nearly impossible as it may be.....you also never know what the future might hold porque la vida da muchas vueltas.....(trust me on this...because I speak form experience too)

This is utter BS. Two centuries ago there was slavery. In Spain, one had the concept of blood-purity and hidalguía. Spaniards with any trace of jewish or muslim ancestry were discriminated against. Not being a member of the catholic church was unthinkable. Etc. etc. None of this sort of discrimination happens today in Spain. Democratic institutions are quite entrenched. You are quite free to go to church if you like. In fact, I would say spaniards are far less religious than spanish-americans, despite some two thousand years of christian presence in Spain, against 500 in Spanish-America. Of course spanish colonization influences you. We are all products of history. But is this an excuse to maintain social practices that we KNOW are wrong? I would say NO. I have never heard a south-african blame the british for apartheid. A mature, sovereign, people takes OWNERSHIP OF THEIR PROBLEMS. Do you blame your parents for your current situation too?

Of course you think my post was utter BS. I wouldn't expect anything less coming from you. You're on the other side of the coin, and you have the attitude to go with it. But I'm on the side that saw 80 to 90 % of the population of my people decimated by Spanish colonization, so I'd say it more than influenced our way of life: it forever changed it. And that's my final thought on this subject. Once the person you're presenting your thoughts to resorts to insults, you know the discussion has gone downhill and there's nothing you can say to prove your point.

Oh, and I don't blame my parents for my current situation. I thank them. They taught me to be proud of who I am and where I came from-- regardless.

Those countries have been independent for some two centuries. It is high time they take responsability for their current situation. If there is racism in latin america it is because latin americans are OK with it TODAY, not because of colonial rule that happened two centuries ago. Two centuries ago in most of Europe, the nobility held all the positions of power. To be a commoner, or, hell, a SLAVE, implied you had no rights at all. Today, this is not the case. I say quit whining and take ownership of your problems. Don't pass the buck on to your dead ancestors. didn't meant to come across as a whiner.. technically my family is on the colonizer side anyway... what i meant to say was that we are still feeling the impacts of colonial rule today (it is undeniable). We are all products of history. To point to a particular event in the past, implies that the origin of the problem lies there. As if the native peoples that were in american before the europeans arrived did not practice slavery, human sacrifice, discriminate on the basis of sex, or wage war on their neighbours.

@ Miguel: So your family is on the colonizer side anyway... Gee, where have I heard that before? Aren't you lucky to have been on the winning side?
If the colonization of Latin America is the not the biggest event to happen in this continent and thus the cause and root of anything and everything that has gone on there for the past two centuries, then I don't know what is. Some events in history change it forever, and I don't know, but I'd  dare say this is one of them, duh! If the Spanish colonization isn't influencing every single aspect of life in Latin America, then call me crazy, but I'd say it is. It's not taking responsibility that's the problem. It's the fact that whatever happened some centuries ago is ingrained in our collective memory. What we've been taught for centuries (that people or darker colour, native people, are second-class citizens, if people at all) is still very much influencing people's thinking today. It is a fact that people of certain colour are discriminated against. It is a fact that indigenous people are discriminated against. If speaking up for their rights is whining, then I'd say whine all you want, because these people haven't had a voice for centuries. It's not that Latin Americans are OKAY with racism. It's where the power lies today that doesn't allow them to not be OKAY with it. And it has every bit to do with the colonization that happened however many centuries ago. We can't help to be the product of it, us being what and who we are today, but the repercussions of what happened then are still being felt today and will be felt for many, many years to come.-- Edited by TV Buff at 08:18, 2006-06-23
