Rap syncopation is very similar to scat styles of Jazz and although melodies are often sampled, they are sampled from.. yes Jazz music or music closer to Jazz such as soul and r&b rather than tribal rhythms and chants. Although there are styles of jazz (moreover latin jazz) with definite influences of african music I couldn't compare hip hop to those genres either. Don't confuse Rap with Hip Hop. Rap is styled around the beat with very little added in terms of music or samples. Hip Hop has a 'melodic' flow to the 'rapping' and rhythmically is more dynamic than a simple rap song. Anyway, I had a better argument but the server crashed and I lost it.

Hiphop is clearly rooted in African Music, since rhytm is its main musical element. Hiphop lacks in melody and harmony musically speaking. Although Jazz has the same roots to some level, you can't say that hiphop came from Jazz. De La Soul does have Jazz influences in their music, that's undeniable, but i think it is incorrect to say that hiphop evolved from Jazz.

ok.. thank you. it's too bad about Mase not being there and especially about the boos!!!! wtf is that?!!! oh well, glad it was a good show regardless. and I heard Tribe is gonna do a reunion tour! link

@Cocotaso: WAIT!!!

Who the heck would boo De La Soul and why the hell are they there???? That was just wrong. For a group to withstand and still be in the industry after 15+ years , they should've been given nothing but respect!!!! And then I saw Confu on my way home!!!! The end. Pics will be posted shortly!!! What songs did they perform? When did the audience boo? How was the sound? How many people? Any openers? How long was the show? How was the actual performance? Do they still have it? You suck at reviews.
For shu Marky Mark:
Songs they performed:
BUDDY
SATURDAY
ME, MYSELF, AND I
BREAKADAWN
RING RING RING
ITZSOWEEZEE
STAKES IS HIGH
BABY PHAT (which they dedicated to all the ladies)
IT'S ALL GOOD
POTHOLES IN MY LAWN
and that's all I can think of right now in terms of songs they performed.
I have no idea why the crowd booed!! But De La Soul didn't look too happy with the crowd. They were trying so hard to hype the crowd that at times they would just stop the music and give the crowd a "you guys suck" look!!
Also, the group did mention something about a music by-law and that they couldn't get their "boom" back. I didn't understand that but I know in that area, GOD forbid a little bit of bass is heard!!! All the old farts will come out running and screaming!!!
I'd say there were about 200 people. The concert was supposed to start at 8. They had a rep from FLOW come on to talk (the girl on weekend mornings with the accent) and then they had a DJ play for about an hour and a half until DLS finally came on but the DJ was really good so I didn't mind.
The group, overall, was fantastic and yes, they still have it!!! Mase was unable to attend because apparently he was at home poppin' tylenols and $hit!!! Eitherway, his replacement was great!!! What I liked the most was that DLS would stop and urge people to support local talent (S.L.U.T ). They also mentioned that hip hop is a result of jazz and wanted to let all those "ignorant" people out there know that hip hop is here to stay!!!
Now, all I need is for Tribe to come and I'll be happy as a pig in $hit!!!
The end or the end until MM is satisfied.

That is correct and if you listen carefully you'll hear the beat from Will Smith's "Gettin Jiggy Wit It" originally from Sister Sledge's "He's the Greatest Dancer"
The end.

De La Soul to perform at Toronto Jazz Festival
One of the greatest forces in hip-hop, De La Soul will be performing at Harbourfront Centre on Friday, June 23, 2006 as part of the TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival. Tickets $29.50 are on sale now and are available at at Play De Record, Rotate This and Ticketmaster (416) 870-8000 or www.ticketmaster.ca
Almost twenty years ago De La Soul broke out onto the hip-hop scene and created a stir with their eclectic sampling and clever rhymes. Their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was hailed as the future of hip-hop at the time and remains today one of the most influential works in its genre. The New York Times labeled them the “hands down champs of thinking person's rap.”
Widely regarded as one of the most relevant and enduring forces in hip-hop, the trio has consistently stayed true to their sound over the decades. Drawing inspiration from funk, soul, pop, jazz, reggae and psychedelia, their music has stayed fresh and everlasting, influencing a new generation of artists. Comprised of Posdnous (Kelvin Mercer), Trugoy the Dove (David Jolicoeur) and Pasemaster Mase (Vincent Mason), De La Soul is truly a creative force with their status firmly cemented as legends of hip-hop.
The TD Canada Trust Toronto Jazz Festival will be cooking for 10 days this summer when it takes over the city from June 23 - July 2, 2006. Bringing all that jazz for the past two decades, the festival is celebrating its twentieth anniversary with more than 1500 musicians performing over 350 concerts at more than 40 locations across the city.
