This means the majority of the players in non-european teams will not play in their home countries. Even many of the players from european countries with weaker leagues, such as France, Netherlands and Germany will also play outside of home. I completely understand why the portuguese would root for Brazil. It's the same reason why many (most, I hope) spanish-speakers will root for a spanish-speaking country: having a common language and culture. In a contest between Ecuador and Poland, guess what? I'm rooting for Ecuador. Even though I've never been there. Who cares if the poles share the same continent as Spain. What on earth do I have in common with a guy from Gdansk named Smolarek? Why hispanics would root for Brazil is something I don't understand... I imagine it's the 'everyone loves a winner' factor. I don't buy the 'we're all latin american' argument. I'd sooner root for Paraguay, though Brazil and Portugal would probably be next, after the spanish-speakers.

Do you mean to say that MOST pro players playing in Italy are NOT Italian? or in Spain mostly not spaniard? or in France mostly not French? or... ?  (not challenging you... curious)

I don't think it's inappropiate for people to ROOT for countries other than their own.... the original question, however, was referring to what I/we thought about other nationalities going as far as wearing our jersey/waving our flag....I would most definitely ROOT for the last spanish speaking team left standing.... would I wear their jersey? no.. wave their flag? no............. and not because of a matter of "pride", but simply because I don't think I deserve to

You can challenge me... we're all friends

Most pro-players in Italy (or Spain) are european. After the 1990 Bosman ruling, whereby any EU national could play, without limitations, in any EU country, I would be hard pressed to say that 'most' players in Serie A, or Primera Division are italian or spanish (respectively). Barcelona won this last Champions League Cup with five (5) spanish-born players. Their rivals, Arsenal, played with three (3) spanish-born players. The rest were from other european countries, and, yes, a few foreigners, though even the foreigners are quick to adopt EU nationality. Did you know Roberto Carlos is spanish? So is Ronaldo.

I do understand what you're saying, mind you. But I think you'll find that, in France's national squad (or the Netherlands, or Belgium's, or Germany's, or Sweden's) the majority of their players play outside of France (or the Netherlands, or Belgium, or Germany, or Sweden). The top players have to play outside of these countries: their leagues are too weak (ie. don't pay enough money). The same goes for the top players from Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, Paraguay, Costa Rica, Brazil, etc., etc.

Evidently, the majority of the soccer players playing in Europe (particularly the lower divisions) are local. But the cream of the crop is international.

As to people wearing other jerseys... I don't know. I truly feel it when Spain wins (or, more often than not, loses ). The rest, I think I agree with you. I certainly want them to win. They will bring a smile to my face if they do. But there is no passion. It's more of a sympathy thing .

Though I personally would have no problem waving Costa Rica's (or Argentina's, or Ecuador's, or Mexico's or Paraguay's) flag if they were to win (or lose). Or wear their jersey. We're all, fundamentally, the same.

But that's my opinion.

¡A por el mundial!

I have the brazilian and argentinian little flags, I actually support any latin american country who makes it to the final.  I think Brazil is gonna win the cup again, I'll probably get those funny Puma shoes with the brazilian colours.

I'm just telling you how I feel... but I'm a bit odd, LOL

My guess is that everyone cheers for brazil because Brazil is favorite... every one wants to "part" of a winning team, I guess
See anyone going crazy to cheer Angola?!!

I tend to cheer for the underdogs... I love "small" teams doing at least mildly well, in the world cup

It is not just the same to see the re-dif. at night, so I guess a little radio will be a MUST have !

Cheering ???? Well, Francia of course even if I doubt they will go far, Mexico, whishing them the best and not to be to paysos on the field and then, every team that deserve it except Brazil (even if they have very good players and all)!

I think Ecuador can get to the second round, but they pretty much have to beat the poles... which is won't be easy, but it's doable.

I'd be very surprised if Mexico wasn't able to get to the second round... in fact I'd say the odds are pretty good they'll qualify first in their group.

But I guess things will start to become clearer this friday

question para los Argentinos in here....what do you think about another person whos not Argentinian wearing an Argentinian jersey???

Frankly, I find it a bit silly for ANYONE to wear a jersey that is not from their country

I’d probably be flattered (in a way) to see someone wearing our jersey, but I wouldn’t wear another country's jersey myself…. Not because I might feel like a “sell out” but a soccer jersey, for most latins, is just like a flag…..I’d almost feel disrespectful (or what’s the emotion I’m trying to describe?) to the nation I’m wearing the jersey from

If I wore an Ecuadorian jersey and encountered an Ecuadorian and asked me “why the hell are you wearing our jersey!?” they’d probably have all the right to be a bit ticked off
I would CHEER for them, but I wouldn’t wear their jersey, I don’t think that’s appropiate

Let THEM enjoy THEIR virtues… no need for me to jump on THEIR band’s wagon

I refuse to believe in superstitions... it won't change the outcome of the games whether you put the flag a year in advance or don't put one up at all... TO ME, superstitions are for "old ladies"
