It didn't involve Eva Longoria or Angelina Jolie, but a scrap featuring Axl Rose and Tommy Hilfiger is still a sweet sighting if you happen to be paparazzi.

That’s what went down Thursday night in New York, when the rocker and clothing magnate squared off at The Plumm – an upscale new club in Manhattan’s Chelsea area.

Rose (pictured), the lead singer of Guns N’ Roses, was at the club to perform for actress Rosario Dawson who was celebrating her 27th birthday.

The set was a supposed to be a surprise gift for the Rent star, but the real surprise came when Rose scuffled with the 55-year-old Hilfiger.

"There was an issue between the two of them," said Plumm owner Noel Ashman.

Things apparently got started when Rose moved the drink of Dee Ocleppo, Hilfiger’s girlfriend.

"I moved his girlfriend's drink so it wouldn't spill," said Rose.

"It was the most surreal thing, I think, that's ever happened to me in my life."

The singer says Hilfiger hit him repeatedly telling him to put the drink back.

"He just kept smacking me," said Rose, 44.

To be fair Hilfiger might tell a different story, but attempts to reach him or a representative yielded nothing.

Luckily there were plenty of other eyes there to take in the events. At the time of the dustup a celebrity crowd was packed into Plumm.

Big names from the entertainment industry including Lenny Kravitz, Mickey Rourke, Kid Rock, Peter Beard, Molly Simms, Wentworth Miller, Ann Dexter Jones, Lydia Hearst and Damon Dash were present for the midnight mini tilt.

Rose seems to have gotten the last word though.

When he finally performed, he dedicated the song “You’re Crazy” to “my good friend Tommy Hilfiger
