I once read in a guide to doing business with other cultures that latinos do not generally look people in the eye when having a conversation. The guide , written from a North American point of view, went on to say that one should not take this as disinterest but simply as a cultural difference. So I guess asking foro members might give you a skewed result.
Right you are. I think in North America people expect more eye contact. I believe in Latin America, men don't look other men in the eye for too long cause is kind of gayish and uncool.

I always look people in the eyes when I am talking to them, it is respectful among other things. Plus, I do think you have something to hide or feel inconfortable if you not able to do it. It's like the hand shaking (and not talking about Manuela, cochinos)

I was just wondering if you guys look at people straight in the eye when having a conversation with someone?I myself cannot do it. Don't know whyI feel rude sometimes because some may think I am not paying attention. Not always straight in the eyes, but in the face in general. Sometimes lips.
YES BUT ONLY IF THEY ARE NOT CROSS-EYED. IT'S SO HARD TO KNOW IF THEY ARE LOOKING AT YOU OR SOMEWHERE ELSE & THEN I SENCE THAT MY EYES GO CROSS-EYED.

I find it hard to look at someone who is cross-eyed. Not to be mean or disrespectful but i just dont know if its rude to look at the one eye that is not cross-eyed or to look at both, I dont know... but yah, thats a hard one.
But apart from that, definately give people eye contact when Im speaking with them, shows that youre interested in what they have to say... unless you really arent, and in that case you can just look at their eyebrows and try to count the hairs...
I always do. It tells me or gives me an idea of i can expect of a person.
Example: at work we met a new lady, she introduced herself, and i always looked her straight in the eye...the impression i got was that she is the nosy type, that i had to watch my back.
and i was right, later another person who knew her longer said that very thing. That this lady was nosy and needed to mind her own business.
Eye contact is very important.

Face I do look at, but I feel that I don't make direct eye contact. Some people don't notice this though because like I said I don't turn my back on them and I don't really look at another direction or to the floor.

u can't look at a person straight in the eyes when u r talking on the phone, so the best way to show that u r paying attention is by giving feed back. no need to look at a person straight in the eyes. X@vier

u can't look at a person straight in the eyes when u r talking on the phone, so the best way to show that u r paying attention is by giving feed back.
