Yansong Ma's 50-storey tower will anchor the 4.5 hectare Absolute Community in Mississauga.A planned 50-storey Mississauga condo tower, with a twisting profile that brings to mind a curvaceous Marilyn Monroe, is the winner of an international design competition. "We believe this competition and this new tower will significantly raise design standards within the residential industry. We have brought the world's best and brightest to Mississauga," co-developer Danny Salvatore said in a news release Tuesday. Yansong Ma, founder of MAD Architectural Design Studio in Beijing, drew up the tower that beat out five other designs. It's the first international design competition held in Mississauga. The gentle spiral that sees the oval building twist almost 360 degrees from bottom to top won accolades from architecture critics around Toronto. Christopher Hume of the Toronto Star, called it stunning and sensuous, dipping and curving "in all the right places." The developers, Cityzen Development Group and Fernbrook Homes, are calling the condo tower the 'Absolute,' but admiring critics have already nicknamed it the 'Marilyn Monroe.' Ma told the media he didn't set out to create a sexy building, but it seems that's how the public has perceived it. Ma's tower was the first choice of the nine-member judging panel and was the favourite of the 6,000 people who cast ballots at an exhibit in Mississauga's Square One last month. Sales of the condos will begin this May. Construction is slated to start late this year and could be completed by the beginning of 2010.
