There is an article about him in the Toronto Star today. This is from the Lula's site because I could load the one from the news paper. But it's more or less the same thing.   The Alex Cuba Band will celebrate their Juno Award nomination for best World Music Recording with a special showcase performance at Lula Lounge on Tuesday March 28th. This group is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer and song-writer Alexis Puentes, who first rose to prominence in Canada as one half (with twin brother Adonis) of The Puentes Brothers, nominated for a Juno award in 2001 for their highly successful album, 'Morumba Cubana'. Recorded in Havana's celebrated Egrem Studios, The Alex Cuba Band CD 'Humo de Tabaco' is the sound of traditional Cuban music - of the mambo, the bolero, of trova and son - brought into the new century with an originality that "... captures your ear with the first listen and continues to tug at your heart..." (Jacira Castro - Salsa Power) The first single "Lo Mismo Que Yo" is a microcosm of the universal appeal of The Alex Cuba Band. Recorded in Havana with the legendary Chu Chu Valdes on piano, and then sung as a duet with Canadian icon Ron Sexsmith, 'Lo Mismo Que Yo' went on to become the first Spanish language song to reach the UK’s Top 20 pop chart. Meanwhile, the video went to #3 in Canada on the Bravo Music Video Charts. In the United States, 'Humo de Tabaco' became the most downloaded Latin music album on iTunes for 10 straight weeks. As well as duets with Ron Sexsmith and U.S. singer/songwriter Jason Mraz, 'Humo de Tabaco' also features an appearance from one of Cuba's most famous musicians, tresero Pancho Amat. “This will be counted as one of the best Cuban music albums and and it distinctly models the music and culture of Havana.” Smashing Mag, Japan "....an album of profound grace, working the territory in between the son, nueva trova and.....acoustic pop." Peter Watrous - Descarga.com Since the release of 'Humo de Tabaco', the Alex Cuba Band has made live appearances in New York City, Los Angeles, London England and in Japan. The concert at Lula Lounge on the 28th will be their first appearance in Toronto. ‘Humo de Tabaco’ is part of the Cuba Ahora series from Globe Star Recordings, which also includes the latest release from the Afro-Cuban All-Stars entitled ‘Step Forward’. For the Alex Cuba Band concert on March 28th - GlobeStar music will be giving away free CubaAhora CD samplers to all those attending. Those logging on to www.globestarrecordings.com can access a free Alex Cuba Band download. For the March 28th appearance at Lula Lounge, the Alex Cuba Band will include such talented local musicians as Chendy Leon Jr and pianist Luis Guerra, and will feature a guest appearance from two members of the Parachute Club, guitarist Dave Gray and drummer Billy Bryans.

TY Julie . . .

This Sounds Like It's Worth Checking Out . . .
