My mother never discouraged me from speaking but I was stubborn and I spoke back to her in English.  This was entirely my fault.
Thanks for the advice.  I'll look into Spanish classes!

Way to go!

Just because your spanish is no the best shouldn't make you feel less Colombian.  Be proud you are Colombiana and maybe take some time to learn more of your native tongue.  It's not as hard as people think to learn spanish.  I personally well not exactly taught but played a huge role in teaching my x-girl (Philipina) how to speak spanish.

It's easy for them to learn, cause their second language is spanish. Plus they have many words that are exactly like ours!!

Probably is not the parents fault,. but it has a lot to do on how parents teach children to love their roots,.. and Spanish is part of the Hispanic root,.. I got ur point that most of the parents do not spend a lot of time with the kids,. but now there are programs in the school that teach Spanish,. and other language,. so as parent you have to give your children other options,. in the long run it will be very benefit for their future,..

I totally agree with you, but I was just saying that it's not the parents fault 100%.  Take my sister and brother, when they speak Spanish they sound like gringos lol but this is due to the fact that since they were babies they went to an all English speaking daycare, and than they were off to school.  So all they heard all day long was English, and only heard Spanish at the end of the day at home.  My mom only speaks to them in Spanish, and I speak to them in both English and Spanish, but yet they still answer in English.  Trust me when I say that both my parents have taught them to be proud of being Guatemalan and Salvadorian...well Latino in general, and they are, but they're still more comfortable speaking in English, because that's what they have heard more of throughout their lives.  Hopefully they will get better at it as time goes by.  We've put them in Spanish classes, but they say that the teachers only teach them the basics things that they already know, but if you or anyone knows of a good school where they will actually learn something new please let me know, because I'll be more than happy to enroll them.

I am Canadian, born and raised... I have Filipino heritage but i don't speak the language, I barely understand it, I don't really like the food, my parents TRIED to get me to speak it, I refused to speak/learn it as a child...

Like LB said, you are who u are, if u feel less Colombian because of language then change your nickname; otherwise, who cares? you're in Canada... LEARN FRENCH!!!

If u really want to learn the languge (any language) go to that country for a while, immersion is the only way to learn.

got to agree with you.. its pretty embarrasing seeing latinos having a hard time speaking their native tongue.. and yeah the parents are to blame!!!

Both my parents are Colombian but they split up when I was really young so I had my mom talk to me in English and my grandma talk to me in Spanish.  Eitherway, I spoke back in English.  I understand it (not Dominicans though, talk too fast) but I still feel crummy!!!
