I became independent at 18 after high school. ( When I was a a kid I used to make kytes (piscuchas), charamuscas, and sell groceries at the little store we had, plus carrying stuff from the market, go for more coca cola and beer, etc.

The irony of the situation is that I still live with my parents ( my dad pays his share of expenses tough) but in many ways they kind of depend on me and my brother for translation services and transportation.  In the eyes of many people I'm a mamma's boy but in fact I wish I was living alone; I just don't have a heart to let them live on their own ( I see they are getting old now).  Girls get mad with me since they like me to take them to my home and I just can't; besides sometimes women make so much noice and I don't want anybody suddenly opening the door to see what's going on..hehehe!!

I AGREE WITH LB!!! WHAT EXACTLY MAKES U INDEPENDENT???

I BECAME INDEPENDANT AT THE AGE OF 12 WHY CUZ I HAD RESPONSIBILITIES!!! PICKING UP MY BROTHERS HEATING UP DINNER SERVING THEM DINNER, MAKING SURE THEY DID HOME WORK AND TOOK A BATH AND THEN IN BED BY 9.30! MY MOTHER WORKED AND WENT TO SCHOOL!

THEN AT THE AGE OF 17 I GOT MY FIRST PART TIME! I PAID BILLS AND PAYING RENT AT HOME AND STARTED BUYING MY STUFF AS WELL!!

THEN I MOVED OUT AT THE AGE OF 23 AND HAVENT BEEN BACK SINCE!

I think I will truly become independent when i get married & move out.

I work, have a carrer, make my own money, can get whatever i want, but I have never lived on my own, nor do I want to.

My parents took care (still do) of me always, paid for my school & my first car. Now it's a bit diffrent cause I have my full-time job, althou they do pay for 1 out of my 3 credit cards.

Well they just like helping, they are the same with my other two older brothers.

I was out of my parents house at 17......Now I thank to them for kicking me out.

I paid for my University on my own working 2 job and doing school. I touched ground, lived in a very ****ty situation, but it was worth.

I THEN MOVED OUT ON MY OWN WHEN I WAS 23

Yes, Angelita I agree with you, I been Independant since I was 17 years old, still leaving with my mother, but paying rent, food, bills, just being with the family doesn't mean you are not independent,it means that you are with your family and still you are independent

Ummm, well I was hoping to remain a TOYS R US kid forever and ever and ever ... or be like Peter Pan and NEVER grow up

Digamos, that me leaving my house would be when I get a ring around my finger just 'cause that is what my parents would like and I can't fight that no longer ...

@LB: For me it iz saving money NOW ... before no I had as much expenses and debt pero gracias a DIOS I'm DEBT free WOO HOO!!! and although les pago un mensual a mis padres just like rent and help out with bills ... I know Mama Cookie is putting it aside and will return it to me in the long run, she tells me so all the time and I tell her NO NO NO pay the bills pero no me escucha ...

But I agree with you, but sometimes you do need your space ... for that reason my dad is renovating the basement I have my own washroom now ... now he is making a kitchen ... gotta convince him to make a door for emergencies LMAO!!!

I declared my independence at the tender age of 19....and even though my parents discouraged me and said that I wouldnt be able to survive. in our crazy world....I can proudly but with lots of respect say that I have proved them so wrong!

Yeah I couldnt go back and live with my parents either...its like driving in a car for year  and then suddenly you gots to take the Rocket, I dont think I could ever take a bus ever again..

Also, at 21, and not by choice. It was very difficult, but it seems I turned out ok.

I think 21, although my mom and I still rely on each other quite a bit, so eventhough we dont live together, I still count on her for a lot and vice versa.

Just like you, my independence didn't come by choice. I was 18 and it was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through, but it turned out okay in the long run.

I moved out when I was 21, few moons ago transition wasn't that hard. But it was kind of extreme because I went to live in another country and did knew the language (Mexico) so I can say that it had been a great experience and a huge learning process. Because apart from learning process of being independent, I had to learn new costumbres and way of life, adapt myself to a complet different society.......

Don't know how many people this question relates to, but I was just wondering at what age did you leave your parents and begin living on your own? What the transition easy or hard?

As for me I was living with my parents up until last year at age 24. I moved out and just recently purchased a home. The transition has been some what easy so far, but there are alot of expenses when not living at home that takes money out of your beer and clubbing allowance.
