I think someone mentioned it before....but there is not enough time in a day for 2 working parents who have their kid in daycare to make a nice HEALTHY home cooked meal....each time the kid has to eat..... AND....how cool will the kid with the apple feel when all the other kids at school have fruit rool ups, or chocolate bars for snacks..... If parents now in days would spend an ounce of extra time as our parents did with some of us between the ages of 3-10...many problems besides obesity could be avoided...... But the lifestyle here is different and money is survival...... A child under 12 needs to be taught things.....and learning by example is also crucial....but between daily kids' homework and parents working....who has the time.....right?
That's it. When I get married and have kids I'm gonna be a stay at home dad.

Ya the parents are to blame. How bad does it have to get before they realize we MAY have a problem here. Our kid is KINDA big.
The problem is multi-faceted which are all intertwined.. The problem lies in the food choices, physical activity, lack of education, television and videos games, oh and I don't want to leave out lack of funds as well. People are just buying more pre-packaged, processed food which have little nutritional value to them but for the sake of convenience and affordability they buy these things for their children. People these days have several jobs in order to pay for necessities (and I don't mean that new car), I mean to pay for their homes and food, so they dont have time to make healthy home made meals, microwave dinners are just more affordable and convenient. I also don't think its easy for every kid to be involved in extra curricular activities. It's expensive and to most parents paying $60.00 for swimming lessons or $160 for a soccer league, just doesn't fit into their budget. I think these activities need to be more accessible and affordable for all families, not just the ones that make more than $50K a year.
thats not always the case!! look at my goddaughter both her parents work hard her mother even a part time but they go to the YMCA for all of this or check out if u have a college campus or university by ur house! cuz many students work volunteer so its dirt cheap to get ur child involved also look at community centers they always have stuff going on and imean for like a memebership fee of 100 for the year so its accessible to everyone its a matter of resourse and looking around not expecting it to come to u

That's true ... But in some areas alot of the activities are paid by the CITY in which your in ... I know my aunt takes my cousin to many activities and she is tight in $$$ but it's free ... I think it depends on age too though ...
Personally, I hate knick knacks. I can't wait to have kids and have them break my MIL's knick knacks - why, I might even help them and have them take the blame, hehehe.
Ooooooh, I just gave myself a great idea. I think my cats will start breaking some pretty soon.

Is it me or do the snacks in North America have way more sugar, salt and artificial flavours than in Latin American countries? I have a mega sweet tooth but I don't really like most snacks here. They're grody - just too damn sweet or too damn salty.
i think its the parents fault...stop feeding ur kids junk food and maybe then they wouldnt b getting so obese!!..kids eat wat is given to them since they dont have much money to buy food on there own..
One of the biggest problems in our society today is the rise of obesity among adults and children in North America. The Toronto Star recently quoted a study saying that over the past 25 years, obesity has more than doubled among adults and nearly tripled among children. Tripled! Among kids!
I think it’s because of the unhealthy, artificial food that is available to them. All these mac and cheese, salty, greasy, sugary snacks they have. Do you know how many different snack (pre packed) arethere in stores for kids, like lunch snacks?! These fast microwave dinners, and all preservatives with no or very little nutrition value. They are all so attractive & easy to grab and eat. On top of bad diet, kids are exposed to these computer, dvd, playbox, nintendo ...whatever games. Of course they are going to be obese. They need to move their butt and join extra activities and sports. Make if mandatory to participate in sports of any kind, and less junk food……for their own good. But its not kids fault, its parenting and schools who need to encourage them and push them, I think.
Yup...kids need to be more active...but if the parents don't put any effort into getting the kids involved into any sort of sports or extracurricular activities then the problem is going to continue rising.
ITS SAD I KNOW MY GOD DAUGHTER I THINK IS THE MOST ACTIVE CHILD IN TORONTO SHE GOES FROM GYMNASTICS TO SWIMMING TO SOCCER AND SHES FLACA BUT LOVES IT!!!

Tripled! Among kids! We don’t know about you, but that greatly alarms and saddens all three of us. We remember that when we were kids, there were hardly any children around who were fat, let alone obese. Perhaps one out of every 20 or so kids might have been overweight, but today according to the charity For The Love Of Kids, nearly one out of every three kids in Canada is obese.
If you’re walking in a mall, or past a group of school kids, you can readily see these statistics ring true. But why are our kids getting fatter?
Kids today are much, much less active than their counterparts were 15, 20 or 25 years ago. The Nintendo Generation seems content to stay indoors and play video games. Parents are also understandably reluctant to have their children play outdoors unsupervised, especially given the rash of highly publicized stories about child abductions, molestations, and murders.
All of these factors, combined with eating habits for kids that to say the least are not health conscious, are producing the fattest generation of children in the history of North America. Lest Canadians become too smug about how our American cousins have it worse than we do, in the case of childhood obesity, that’s simply not true — our kids are fatter than their American counterparts.
One of the reasons we have jumped into the fitness arena is that we too are concerned about this problem. We all have kids (except Nicky, but his wife is expecting any day now), and we want to reverse the obesity trend. We think — know — that it can be done. To tackle the problem, two primary issues need to be addressed: diet and exercise. Today, we’ll look at diet.
Kids today need to be weaned off of the high-sugar and highly processed food diets that they are on. Endless cans of sugary soda, processed foods, and fast foods are part of the problem. Parents need to get involved and start encouraging their kids to eat better. But they can’t just dictate to their kids — they need to lead by example. Kids do as you do, not as you say, and your example is the most powerful factor in getting your kids to act positively.
If you have kids, and you won’t clean up your act for yourself, do it for your kids. Reduce your portion sizes, get rid of pop at home, and start buying and eating more whole foods at home. We’ll talk more about this issue next week.
