I think this thread shows very strong opinions.  I think the reason why this incident got so much media coverage is because it clearly depicts the violence escalating in our cities to the point that kids (including the 17 yr old kid that got arrested) are shooting people in broad daylight in a less violent neighborhood then the ones society is used to hearing the violence coming from.  Giving the time of the year also enhances the shock value of the story and newspapers and tv channels are a business. 

Even though this is unfortunate, hopefully the attention this incident is receiving will make the guvernment pay more attention to the rise in gun related crimes in the city of toronto and surrounding areas, which by the way, is still low in comparison to other big cities in the rest of the world.

It is my understanding that it is this victim's community (School, family, neighbours and friends)that have ensured such exposure and set up such programs as before mentioned in her name.  However, why doesn't the neighbourhood of other areas where such crimes take place, start taking charge about what happens in their own backyard?   

In order to decrease the amount of gun related violence I think that not only guvernment must tackle each gang at a time, but also there has to be a shift in the way culture is educated and what sort of violent examples people are exposed to from such a young age, being music lyrics, tv shows, video games, etc... other than that, expect this city to get even more violent as the population increases in the next few years, with it increasing  the level of educational and moral ignorance this society allready suffers from, and we see an even a more distinct line dividing the different social classes.  Just remember, just because you saw 10000 times someone shooting someone on tv and you dont do it because your good religion based moral family values (and the "chancletasos" you received in the younger years) taught you it was wrong, doesn't mean others think the same.

This topic can go on and on, but its BS trying to turn it around and instead of paying your respects for the others that died from such crimes you are actually trying to compare them to another human being that we've lost from similar crimes.   That is why these crimes keep on occuring, no change in mentality.

I agree with Daveed.... find the junk inside their trunk and expose it man....if you get to make the link on why this girl is so exposed, than you have right justification to express such opinions (or whomever wrote that post) otherwise, whatever! Poor girl, and her family, and the families of all violent related accidents.....specially at christmass time....

in a way i think it will...but in another i don't because they are "hard" as they like to call themselves and by bein put in jail wouldn't make much of a difference to them because their already involved in that game. but then again it might give some of them a reality check if the government makes it harder for them to get out of jail because of the crime they've commited.

Where in my statement did I call you ignorant?  I was talking about people in general.  That post was not dirrected towards you hun.  I have never and will not disrespect you as long as you show me the respect that I have shown you.  I wasn't saying that those who don't share my point of view are ignorant, what I meant is that they don't want to see the world for what it really is.  The truth that I talk about is the fact that this country isn't all peaches and cream like many like to portray it.  Yes it is ten million times better than other countries, but the bottom line is that just like many other countries have their dark secrets so does this one, and making minorities look more like criminals than the white people, and paying more attention when a white person is harmed vs a minority is one of them.  This is a fact that many people refuse to see, or in other words they know that it's there, but prefer to turn the other cheeck and pretend like it's not, hence my "people walking around with blindfolds" statement.  Now in regards to the "people running around like chickens with their heads cut off" statement...well what I mean is that these people are really truly ignorant to their surroundings.  Now being ignorant isn't always a bad thing it just means that you are not educated or have the knowledge when it comes to certain things.  Hey I am ignorant when it comes to...umm...curling...lol ...you know that canadian sport.  I have no clue what that's about...so I am ignorant when it comes to that.  Everyone is ignorant about something, so being called ignorant is not all bad.  Bottom line is I never called you ignorant, and never disrespected you hun.  I hope you get what I was trying to say in my last post, or perhaps I have confused you even further lol  Either way I have no beef with you, and I am only stating my opinion, nothing more, and nothing less.

Rexdale, Jane & Finch, Scarborough & Regent Park (amongst others) have earned the re****tion of being "unsafe", full of thugs area in the city of Toronto.....blame it on race or whatever you want but POVERTY and lack of PARENTAL GUIDANCE play a big role in "hoodlums" turning out the way they do....."after school programs" can help the situation a lot.....BUT a murder can happen to anyone, BY ANYONE, anywhere at anytime......regardless of race, age, wealth.....etc

There was a lot of media attention on the rexdale shootings, but not only are we NOT safe to attend a shooting victim's funeral, we can't go downtown shopping?????
