People across the city were hoping for a fresh start in 2006 after the terrible events on Boxing Day and the many other incidents of deadly gun violence in 2005, but that didn’t happen as the city recorded its first homicide of the year early Sunday morning.

It happened just five hours into the new year when a man was gunned down in the Eglinton and Locksley Avenues area, near Dufferin. There are few details available about the murder, but police said the 21-year-old victim, since identified as Dillan Anderson, was found slumped over in a vehicle.

Anderson was rushed to Sunnybrook-Women’s College Health Sciences Centre where he was pronounced dead, and so far, no arrests have been made. Authorities are still trying to determine a motive for the fatal shooting and haven’t released any details about a suspect.

A post mortem examination is scheduled for Monday.

This awful incident comes just hours after it was announced that the city, the province, and the federal government had agreed on a plan to combat gun crime after a very violent year - 52 people were killed by the weapons in 2005.

The three levels of government will create a task force to combat crime and agreed on what’s called reverse onus bail when dealing with violent offenders, which means the accused must demonstrate why they should be released.

The city, the province and the feds also confirmed their support for a ban on handguns and said they will work to ensure minimum mandatory sentences for criminals who use guns.

My depest condolences for Jane's family! may she R.I.P

There is just one question I would like to ask...and maybe you could ask yourself this question as well.

Why is it that because Jane was a white, blue-eyed Canadian, the government is now, after 52 shootings, giving their condolences to her family? Could it be because shes white and the government doesn't care about the poor people in this city?
If they did...they would have gone to all the poor, ghetto neighbourhoods of all the other shootings and they would have given their condolences to the families and neighbours of those victims.

And to the stupid racist person that wrote "Muerte a todos estos negros idiotas !!" is first of all IGNORANT because by killing someone evidently is NO way to solve ANY problem as we've CLEARLY seen from all the murders this past 2005. Maybe before you write something racist and stupid you should think through exactly what your writing mijito!

All I want to say is R.I.P Jane and that THE VIOLENCE MUST STOP!

hope what I said made you see something different
