It wasn’t Hurricane Katrina, Xbox 360 or George W. Bush. No, the most popular Google search of 2005 was Janet Jackson.

Even though it’s been almost two years since her famous “wardrobe malfunction” at the Super Bowl and despite the fact that her brother beat child molestation charges just months ago, the 39-year-old beat out the South Asian tsunami, Katrina and the newest Xbox toy for the top Google searches by Canadians.

Jackson made the news in 2005 with rumours that she secretly had a daughter about 18-years-ago, a claim the singer hotly denies. And then there was the paparazzi video of her sunbathing in the nude, which surely garnered some online attention.

The information sought by Canadians varied from month to month, but looking at a list of the most successful keywords suggests that it’s youths that are doing most of the Googling.

Most adults would have no idea what Inuyasha is, but the Japanese cartoon was the most popular search in February, March and April and the third most popular search in January and June.

Other favourites include teen entertainers Hilary Duff, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Chad Michael Murray.

Other than in May, Duff was on the Top 10 most searched list every month in the first half of the year.

Controversial rapper 50 Cent was also a force on the list, climbing from the nine spot in February all the way to number two by July and never dropping out of the top ten.

In the airline wars, Air Canada and Westjet tied by appearing in the Top 10 four times each.

Canadian actress Rachel McAdams was the ninth most popular search. Her movie The Family Stone was this week's No. 3 movie at the North American box offices.
