I really wanted to know who's bright idea the engagement ring was so I went to wikipedia.org and found this:

Engagement Rings

Engagements rings are to be worn on the fourth finger of the left hand. This tradition is thought to be from the Romans, who believed this finger to be the "vena amoris" (vein of love), the vein that leads to the heart. Romantic rings found were found in this era (from as far back as 4 AD) which resembled the Claddagh Celtic symbol (two hands holding a loveheart) and so it is thought that this was used as some symbol of love and commitment between a man and a woman.

The concept of an engagement period began in 1215 at the Fourth Lateran Council, when Pope Innocent III declared a longer waiting period between betrothal and marriage. The modern Western form of the practice of giving or exchanging engagement rings began in 1477 when Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond ring as an engagement present.

She actually compared rings of a similar carot but different quality and showed my how little some of them vary. I'm no cheapy (well maybe a little) but if I can save a thousand or two for practically the same ring, that no one without one of those microscopes could see the difference, why not. And in anticipation of your question. No it wasn't anywhere near being yellow.

I'll tell you what I think: I woman should demand whatever she wants. She should not be demanding in the sense of "I'll sit on my pretty ass and do nothing while you work all day and bring me expensive things and diamonds," but a woman should be outspoken enough to not let you "assume" what she wants. Isn't it easier when they "tell you" what they want instead of guessing and playing mind games? If you think she would appreciate an expensive ring, why don't you ask her what she wants? I know the whole "spoil the surprise and romance" excuse, but this is 2005 and I think by now women pretty much know what they want and how to ask for it, and if they don't, then they should. Para que andarse con rodeos, no?

You know her best and know what she truly likes and would like! My suggestion is look in her jewelry box or what jewelry she wears is it bling bling is it decent or very subdude??

If u take her to choose it then u take the fun away from 1-it being a surprise and romantic yes and takes away u putting any thought in to it what so ever! If it were me i would want u to pick something that u looked at and went omg thats so beautiful it reminds me of her! or thats perfect i know she would like it!! something that i can one day pass on to my son and say u can use this ring to propose ur daddy picked out cuz it reminded him of how beautiful i was or whatever u get the sappy point!!
