I don't remember being told any stories like that....

But from now on.....with my nephews or si Dios quiere...one day I have kids.......

If they're bad....I'm gonna tell them that "La Bruja JINX" is going to eat them.

So... does it mean that most of you are ok with instilling discipline through fear?

Ummm, the story I was told was about a woman who's baby was taken away and she just cried and cried and cried ... and for that reason she would take kids ... Algo asi ...

But check this out there are 4 different versions of the story (but they all kinda have things in common) so is it true, now I'm

My parents never told us anything like that, but we did have this Big Ass Thick Belt from El Salvador hanging on the kitchen door. We were affraid that if we didn't eat, we would get it with the belt!!

My grandma always use to tell me about el cuco too but i never really knew what it was that i should be scared of. She use to tell us stories about las brujas que salian de noche and how they would steal kids from their beds..(now that freaked me out)

Me decian que el cucuy, que mariangula would come take me si no me portaba bien ... All that stuff but as we grow older we ourselves realize that this is not true ... but it does set limits ...

ITS HAS ITS NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE ACTIONS.....

HAVING LITTLE MAN AND I NEED HIM TO STOP AND BEHAVE I TELL HIM "VA VENIR EL CUCO A BUSCARTE" AND HE STOPS SO MOST OF THE TIME IT IS AFFECTIVE.....

BUT EVERYTHING HAS IT LIMITS I TRY NOT TO SAY THAT WORD AROUND WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE OFF CUZ THEN HE BECOMES SCARED OF THE DARK......

WHEN I WAS GROWING UP MY MOM USED TO SAY EL VIEJO DE LA BOLSA DE VA A VENIR A BUSCAR.....FUNNY THING IS WE USED TO HAVE A HOMELESS GUY LIVING AT THE CORNER OF OUR STREET AND HE ALWAYS CARRIED A BAG WITH HIM SO MY MOM USED TO SAY THAT QUE TENIA CHICOS ADENTRO PORKE NO SE PORTARON BIEN........

...te va a llevar el (insert scary thing here). "Stay here and don't talk to strangers because they'll kidnap you and you'll never see us again." I'm pretty sure that as latin kids you all got those scary stories from your parents or grandparents as a form of discipline. For me it was "el cuco". In other parts of Mexico it was "el coco" or "el viejo del costal". I have no idea what the "cuco/coco" looked like but you better believe it that I behaved.

Tell any white person that nowadays though and they'll freak out. They'll go as far a calling it child abuse, bad parenting, etc. I don't know if they'd be right or exaggerating (like usual) but I did grow up to be quite a scaredy cat.

Do you think this is harmless or is it bad? What kind of stories did you guys get?
