It just sickens me to realize that a great deal of our comfort must, somehow, rest on so many other people's deprivation and even death. If it drove me crazy while in Cuba, here is the more obvious. I mean, I was sharing with someone that there must be as many christmas trees around downtown toronto as there are homeless people in the city (4 thousand, more or less).
And I don't wan to start an argument on whether homeless people should be more or less government supported. I believe no human being should sleep hungry and out in the cold and when it happens the government steps in.
(Same with gun crime. None should live in fear. Just think what it means for children to grow around, say, Jane and Finch)
One only wishes there were more election time frenzies. Makes the govt pass a whole lot of very much needed pieces of legislation!
This is very interesting. I further researched this. All these statistics are 2000 or before but the differences make no real impact.
(You have to watch the video in the link to understand the following data)
If we calculate the corresponding percentages (and lump North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Oceania into the "western hemisphere" category), we get the following ratios for our population of 100:
Asians: 60
Europeans: 12
Western Hemisphereans: 15 (9 Latin Americans/Caribbeans, 5 North Americans, 1 Oceanian)
Africans: 13
52 would be female 48 would be male
70 would be non-white 30 would be white
89 would be heterosexual 11 would be homosexual
6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth, and all 6 would be from the United States.
