OK...Here is the update:

First I would like to thank everyone for you opinions.

I was glad that I did not tell her anything.

So this is how it went down, I was told that she was about to be called in but Human Resources came up with a better Idea so that she wouldn't get lay off.

Here is was the idea: cut the working days from 5 to 3 for some PPL in my department until mid January ( i was not included in this cut neither was my friend), the other idea was for everyone to take as many vacation days as possible. Our department needed to save $50.000 and the best way was through our salaries. (this is why I'm at home today)

My friend doesn't know that she was going to get the boot.....but if she keeps using the phone for personal calls for up to 1 hour she will for sure get the boot...she has already been warned.

You made the rigth decision, is not your job to tell her, I mean , it not easy to tell someone She's gone, there will be some explanation. Human resources people and boses takes courses on how to deal with this situation, you can be sympathetic with her when all is said and done, you don't have to tell her you knew about it, chances are She already knows anyways.

By the way, a few more people are going to be laid off next week, they know already,they were told in advance. So many people have been laid off including 4 PhDs, next week the receptionist and an office lady are being let go too. As I said before I was also let go last year and rehired at another position, I was told one month in advance so I took a one month vacation backhome before knowing about the other job, not too many jobs in December anyways.

You girl are a really nice person, you must be a real sweety.

@chica wow.....if I was in your position I would Never tell her, it's just not your call. I know it's an iffy situation if she is your co-worker/friend from work but u gotta remember "Confidentiality". If you spill the beans to your friend & your boss finds out...those are enough grounds to get you out immediantly. Just not worth it.

Now if me & fea worked together & I knew this would happen to her, then for sure i would tell her. Reaseon being that me & fea have been friends for so, so many years & I trust her enough that i would be 100% sure that she won't rat me out, but for just a friend co-worker....i dont think so.

You have mae the right decision, even if she s yout friend and find out that you knew about it, she will have to understand that this is work related and that it does not change the bounds you have. Well, that is how I will react, since I have been in those situations before.

Hola ok 1 i will have aconversation with her telling that the company is going to get a lot people to let go and telling like a tip to try to look some secon job so she no get hard when that hapen just like friend to friend u no get problem with ur boss and she can be prepared for anything hapen and for no problem telling that u r looking to so she can get the anybody can lost the job too(i'm sorry for my english is no that good i know but i hope u undertand what i try to say chao)

my two cents:

Tell your co-worker friend if he/she is a cry-on- your -shoulders- and -eat- lunch- everyday- and- i- know -what- you -did -last- summer- friend, then tell the person that the word is spreading fast of some ppl who may get laid off that may include him/her, because when the word spreads fast you can only narrow it down to a few who must know which in turn includes you.

If Your boss hasn't noticed that you and your co-workers are as friends as mentioned above, then your boss won't have suspicions that you spilled the beans.

If neither one applies then its best not to say anything untill the VERRY LAST MINUUUUUTTTEEE, like when he/she gets called into boss' office.

Reasons not to tell: nothing to lose.
Reasons to tell: get your friend on the jobhunting wagon.....

I personally though couldn't care less if I was told or not by a friend. You have a big heart Chica Wow!

CHica Wow, I think is better not to tell her about it, it is symply not your job, I mean SHe may appreciate your concern but SHe may also take it the wrong way, she'll be able to figure out what to do when the time comes. By the way, I was laid off last year, the co-workers didn't like it but I was the newest one, I guess that's what I want to believe, well, the company suddenly offered me another job, I took it and make more money but I don't like it, I'm still trying to find another one. Everybody though another guy was going to be laid off but is better to wait and see the official statement. Is not as bad as one may think, sometimes change is good. Meanwhile I entertain myself buying lotto tockets once in a while,hahaha!

is better if yiu live it to your boss I can understand how you feel but remember when you are co-workers you are co-workers at work ,but keep the friendship out side work because you don't want to loose your work. At the end of this you guys will still be friends and all u can do is be there for her but let your boss do his job............. OK I hope that helps you.

i have been in the position of knowing who is being laid off before as well, including people i had a personal relationship with outside of the office. i never said anything and would never say anything. you really don't know how someone is going to react and it might come back and bite you in the ass... keep your mouth shut!!
