@ dogo i really think you are missing the point- we have big plans for the industry awards the same way the internatinal film festival when it started with a bunch of local actors and directors i hate to use that as a point but thats the direction we are going at. We are just using the blue print they used and in the future when the industry awards starts to turn heads from the internatinal markets and and your favorite artists comes to town we all know were you are going to be. you think that your comments are going to change anything its jusr sad that all you can think of is the short term money instead of looking at the bigger picture. i dont know who you are but i hope you are not one of thoughs people that keep saying oh montreal is so hype why cant that stuff happen here and if you are the reason why it doesnt happen in toronto you just have to look in the mirior
As I said, I was trying to stay away from this thread, but........ <LB laughing>
It’s too bad you choose to get personal with comments such as "I should look at myself in the mirror" and suggesting that it’s "people like me" are trying to boycott the Toronto Latin art scene. I also can’t think of a more ironic comment!
I think I treated you with as much respect as this topic allowed, and practically apologized on every post if I was being offensive.
I also wished you well on your show (maybe you thought I as being sarcastic, I wasn’t)
I also know how to get personal and could easily slam you on a topic such as "ethical business practices" (I’ve owned my business for over 16 years, built almost solely on those principals) , but then I would have to get "personal" as well and I try hard not to do that, and I’m not here to make enemies or to try to offend you, if I did, I apologize, but it just goes with the topic and I can‘t avoid to make certain comments to state the obvious and get my point across
I tried to do it objectively but you just wont have it that way (and honestly... I think that you just don’t understand the principal that I’m trying to put across, no offence)
We can keep going in circles for ever, or... we can just say that you think it is ethical to expect people to "donate" their time for a private enterprise to turn a profit... and that I simply can not agree to that on principal. So I guess we can just simply agree to disagree, and I’ll leave it at that
Good luck with the show
Have a good one

If you want to volunteer and be a part of the event reply to that, open a new thread if you crave to discuss the ethics of volunteering and / or recruiting volunteers for profit and non-profit events..... Ya, sorry about that, we forgot to check with you first
For the record: 100's of volunteers have made 30 years of Toronto International Film Festival a success...... and as long as customers line up to watch 300 international films then everyone gets paid in the end........except for volunteers - it's a fact that volunteers accept because they would likely have fewer alternatives to experience these events..... For the record: TIFFG is a charitable organization that supports that specific art "charitably", nationally and provincially through a number of other "charitable organizations", hardly a fair comparison.
You shouldn't be afraid to accept volunteering at the latin industry awards event because you'll have fun, hardly any work involved during the red carpet and then you should be able to enjoy the rest of the evening! I'd volunteer but it conflicts with my schedule..... You’re missing the point
BTW, Why the debate? If you want to volunteer and be a part of the event reply to that, open a new thread if you crave to discuss facts re. TIFFG, the levels of fear in accepting volunteer work or wether it conflicts with your schedule or not................................. ironically
I was trying not to debate and stay away from this thread, but hey...

It’s a real simple answer to the discussion You mara, ke t peka, dogo think you know it all and I think I know it all when it comes to my business. The only resolution is to be an adult about it say sorry if offended you. If you don’t wish to volunteer a simple no or maybe this would be a welcomed change say nothing.

HOW MUCH MONEY WILL SABOR NUEVO ENT. MAKE IN PROFITS OUT OF THIS EVENT???
AFTER PROMOTION, , SECURITY, DJS, (BTW, CLUBS PAY FOR HALF OF THIS) ,AWARDS AND PERFORMANCES ( IF THEY GETTIN PAID) YOU STILL MAKE SOME GOOD LOOT.... SO WHY ASK FOR VOLUNTEERS?? WHY DONT YOU HIRE PEOPLE THAT ARE QUALIFIED AND WORK IN THE INDUSTRY??
I SHOULD SAY THANK YOU?? NAH, YOU SHOULD TELL ALL THE PEOPLE THAT GO TO YOUR PARTIES "THANK YOU" CUZ THEY'RE THE ONES PAYING TO ATTEND.
I'D VOLUNTEER EDDIE, BUT I HAVE BILLS TO PAY. I THINK EVERYONE ELSE DOES TOO....
I'll try my best to come across as objective as possible, and not as hating on this award show
I still think it’s a great thing that you are doing what you're doing, ands it’s probably thanks to businesses like yours that I’m a bit more aware of what’s going on with artists in the latin community, and as I said... it is probably a lot more than what I’m doing for them. So I don’t think that I’m doubting your intentions, and I also understand that you are in the business to make money, which is great, we all wish we could run a successful business, and I truly hope you do well with that.
However, I pointed out everything that I pointed out because I have very strong business ethics and that’s why maybe I feel so strongly about this.
Now I am not angry that you guys are asking these? Why would you be angry? It is simply a discussion.
I am just surprised that you don’t know the answer
I didn’t know the answers on this because I’m simply not involved in your trade, and I thought it was safe to assume that it was being organized in the way that the Grammy’s or the Oscars are (by members of their own association = their peers) Which I gather this isn’t the case
An event like this is not free everything costs advertising security audio visual the awards and all the necks nacks needed to make it what you visualize
Everything in this world cost money Sabor Nuevo makes money but we also feed it back to the community exp. Advertisers djs promoters
I realize an event like this is not free to produce, that is my very point! You should be paying for the services that you are going to require!! that’s why people employ companies such as yours to organize it, and pay you and their people for it, just as in any other type of business. As far as feeding it back to our comunity... All people that own a business feed it back into their own trade comunity, they need their very product and services to run their business.
Just to make a point I love the fact that I have to sit here on a daily biases and answer? I think it’s only fair that you answer our questions, because if you are asking us to donate our time to a "cause"... then it makes perfect sense for us to ask those q’s, andyou should be prepared to answer them, after all it is YOU that is asking US for OUR free time
1 taken the time out to organize such an event 2 fronting up all the money necessary to make it an incredible evening 3. all the money we raise for charities 4 the sports teams we sponsor # 3 & 4 are great, more companies should do that! 5 promoting local and the Hispanic culture # 1, 2 & 5, aren’t these the very services that your company provides? 6 giving people an opportunity to be involved in something and get a feel on organizing event and breeding the sabor Nuevo of the futureShall I go on? How humble! You give people an opportunity to work for your Co. for free? So that they can "breed" the Sabor Nuevo of the future!!?? I almost feel like I should be saying "thank you"!!!!.......Dude!! You make it sound as if WE should be paying YOU to volunteer!!!!! with all due respect, how patronizing is that bro!!
I am getting endless emails and calls from the artists and people nominated saying thank you and excited that we are organizing it and giving it the hype it deserves
So what I am saying is once in a while especially from the forum I would like to hear thank you guys for organizing these events because if it is not us then its like last year and the year before that NOTHING
Look, in th end what I’m trying to say is that the event you’re trying to put together is great, and I think your intentions are good, there should be more companies like yours to promote our arts, and you’re also trying to run a successful business, which is fantastic! I hope you make millions, I truly mean that. And yes, thank you for trying to organize some other events (such as the "Salvador" thread) and I hope a thousand people show up to volunteer and make a SHIT load of money, but that’s because the money will go to "the people" so I’m sure people will volunteer gladly.
I don’t care where your money goes, it’s your money, and it is your prerogative to do with it as you will, and I hope my posts didn’t come across as "where is YOUR money going?" or "How are you running your business?" ‘cause I truly don’t care where your company’s money is going..... until........ you ask me for my "volunteer" time, because you see, now it just became my money (=my time) that you will be taking home, and yes I want to know where my "time" is going. Only at that point I will ask you if this is in fact going to the artist that I will be taking a weekend away from my family to help out?... or... is it going into the organizers pocket?
If the profits from this show is going to your company then (as I said) I hope you jam the place and do very very well, but you CAN’T do it at the expense of "other" peoples "free" time/money. Be nice and share :)
(BTW, I’m only trying to be objective, have a discussion with you, and get my point across, don’t take it as bashing, ‘cause I’m not here to do that, so I think I’ll just drop it before you get the wrong impression)
Best of luck with the show

Eddie, (I speak for myself only)....whether I tell you all the time or not, I am grateful for what you guys do sometimes FOR THE LOCAL ARTISTS.....it's your company and you are entitled to run it anyway you please....no one is telling the foro crew how they should each run their business.......
HOWEVER......
As you will notice in this forum.....it's not that people are ungrateful......some are truly haterz LOL but the majority point out the obvious concerns of any "paying" customer looking for quality......like the WAY something is being organized instead of WHY you are organizing it.....At least you guys are doing something and primarily you are doing your JOB and you need to get paid for your time & expenses NO DOUBT......just don't try to take advantage of people along the way.....Volunteers in this case.....
These people are only speaking out as part of that "community" you do things for......
Volunteers are great for non-profit organizations and help the people IN NEED........and in such cases you will have a flood of people at your door eager to help i'm sure...... (And I have to admit that DOGO made valid points about this matter)
You have not specified what you need volunteers for......you just said red carpet organization.....and that to me that seems to be the promoter's job don't you? You guys could hire people instead of recruiting free labour and time.....
In my case....I will gladly help you out and I will do it as a volunteer, especially where local talent is concerned.....God knows it won't be first or last time I work for promoters who pocket $$$ for my services/ideas.....I'm sure if you came on here it's because you probably have mo money in your budget to pay for a crew right? So I will try to help you out however I can.....
BTW: You posted the El Salvador Fundraiser thread just in time..... SN is pretty smart and business savy.....(and I'm not saying it sarcastically like most would)
Good Luck with your event...it's YOUR event, so do with it as you please.

even if they go home with all the $$$ (I assume you mean the organizers) .....I see how much local artist struggle financially for the love of music...so why would I try to make a penny from that
Again, you're just too kind.... the problem is that it would NOT be the "financially struggling artist" that would be "going home with all the $$$" (as you put it) it would be the organizers "going home with all the $$$".... so how does that directly help the artist financially? (once again, I'm only posting based on assumptions that this is NOT a "non for profit" event)
Maybe it's just that I always root for the underdog... But I can't believe that most of you don't see this as an injustice.

@ Joker.... I understand and agree with what you just said.... People are free to invest their "time and energy" on whatever they want...whether is the local talent in my case OR Salvaid like Dogo.... So long as what we're doing is helping someone in need.... Even organizations like GOODWILL, make money off of the "volunteers" but those volunteers are fulfilled and satisfied knowing that they helped someone who needed it. Yes LB, but the difference is that goodwill is a non for profit organization and the "profit" that goodwill makes goes directly to learning programs and education for needy people and not for "Mr Goodwill’s" Tuesday morning golf game, that is exactly why people donate their time with pleasure. Struggling artists also need "help" to stay afloat... Organizers simply don’t, they are PAID to organize, but pocket YOUR money (volunteers money) and don’t give YOUR money to the artists just because you’ve donated YOUR time, that’s what I have a problem with (again, this is all assuming that this is the way it works, I haven’t read anything that would confirm or deny this yet)
I have volunteered and organized many fundraisers in my time.....(school, university, summer camps, YMCA...etc) And I believe you, but the key word here is "fund-raisers", as in "raising funds" not as in "making profits"
Now....I choose to dedicate my time with the local talent, simply cuz I can and want to.....whether OR not the next guys is pocketing the loot....that's their prerogative.... Then what’s the point? If it’s NOT the people you intended to help the ones that are getting the help!?
Look, what I’m trying to say is that your intentions a very noble, I mean really, it’s very kind hearted of you, and you do a lot more for these artist than you might realize, by continuously posting their upcomoing shows here, which that, to me, does a lot more than you going to some show to unroll the red carpet in the name of helping people you care about, when in fact you’ll just be helping someone else get a little bit richer.... It’s true this award show will "help" some of the local artists, but it’s minimal compared to what you can do by helping the artists directly. My point is you’re helping at the wrong end. (Unless of course, this is in fact a "non for profit" event... in which case I’ll have no problem swallowing my own words and apologizing)
Does anybody know the facts of these types of award shows?

Buffy and Dogo....you guys brought up some good points....and VERY TRUE. Let's wait to see what Eddie says about the proceeds, you could be wrong....and obviously if he's asking for volunteers it means they wont get paid for organizing the thingy.... I personally would have no problem volunteering for this or any other local talent related event.....whether it's for sabor nuevo or fulano de tal promotions....and even if they go home with all the $$$.....I see how much local artist struggle financially for the love of music...so why would I try to make a penny from that, if it's in my hands to help I WILL DO IT GLADLY....(and Eddie knows this)
I know you and I know you would have no problem volunteering your time for such an event, and maybe you’re just a better person than I am.
However, I can also see myself helping a “struggling artist” directly, by lending them a hand in whatever is needed, because I know they probably need all the help that their friends can offer, even if at the end of the night they took all the money, ‘cause I know that in the end most of them don’t do it for the money, and it’s hard to survive solely on a few performances a year, so I can certainly understand that.
But to “volunteer” for something that it’s only object is to profit and no funds are going to the “struggling artists”…. I’m sorry but I would feel totally exploited, not to mention the artists themselves… and most importantly not to mention the utter lack of business ethics, and personal integrity. (I’m only assuming the worst case scenario here, I haven’t read a reliable reply yet, - no offence to buffy- so take this just as an opinion assuming that this is solely for profit, and not a personal attack on whoever is organizing this)
This would make a lot more sense if the artists themselves would have a “non for profit organization” to promote their art and organize such events, and share the funds… but to volunteer just so that a promoter could take home a little more money than he/she would’ve if he had to hire someone to do part of their job, and laugh at you, me and the “struggling artists” all the way to the bank!…. no, I don’t see it
If this is done in the name of “helping the local artists” then the funds should go back to the artists and along with the “statue” (or whatever they get) they should get part of the funds that were raised in this event as prize money, to help them develop even further. That’s how you do things to help the community which you claim to want to help, NOT a pat in the back and an applause, while you’re sorting out your bills in the back room.
Big ups to Eddie, sabornuevo or whoever is organizing this, you’re certainly doing a lot more than I am for this particular cause, and I’m sure it will help many local artists with a little more exposure, but if you’re doing it for the “buck” then it’s certainly not right to ask for "free labour"… no matter which way you flip it, flop it, or stir it… it’s just ethically wrong (as I said I’m only assuming the worst case scenario, I’m sure to change my view if anyone posts the contrary to be true)

OK, I hope I don’t come across harsh ‘cause it’s not my intention, I think I’m just curious, and maybe I’m just totally ignorant as to how these things work (actually I know I am, so bear with me)…but isn’t this a private event?….or is this a “non for profit” thing?... don’t the organizers get paid to “organize” this?…. if so, I take it the proceeds are going to some private enterprise, and not some good humanitarian cause, no? If all of the above is true, then why ask for volunteers? And why would anyone volunteer? why not hire people to do the organizers job? And why would anyone let the organizers keep the share of the work they’ve done?…. Maybe it’s just me, but I can see my free time going to a “good cause”(such as Salv-aid, etc…) but not much else If I’m totally off, and in fact the moneys are going to a good cause etc…. then that’s cool, and wish you best of luck
Hey bro I was just thiking same thing, I don't think this is non profit event.....
@ Dogo: Good point. I think it's a business strategy. I've seen TLN do this ALL THE TIME and we, as the public, are just so thrilled to be part of this that we don't care to be giving away our free time. This industry is just so flashy that people just love to be in the middle of it. But you're right, the profits go to their pockets and the volunteers get the thrill of being part of it. They actually learn things and make good contacts, so it's not so bad after all. To pay people to do this would be extremely expensive, so it's a really good tactic on the part of the organizers. I'm sure they'll have a lot of people wanting in, although if they wanted the best quality, they'd pay, 'cause the good ones don't do it for free.
