I've known about people who have paid their mortgages by selling other typical food from their home. The food is a secret, empanadas is just one example my friend.

ANything but selling those warehouse products or that shake that make people thin.
I remember that EL CHINO used to deliver beer, cigarretes, and other staff " a domicilio"; but that would be to risky for a nice lady like you.
What about some kind of food that people can buy at your place at certain hours. My mother buys tamales from a lady this way. The lady gives her a call whenever She makes them. Also, She makes different kinds of tamales so people don't get fed up with the same taste.
The food should be made in mass, and at a good price, with little energy and material costs.
I think you are colombiana aren't you?, why don't you try making empanadas with that spicy killer hot sauce?, they are really good.

Word of mouth is great tool and its free, but if you are opening up a full time shop, you need to do advertising and find the right mediums, not just any type of advertisement. Just havin word of mouth is only great when you have for example Genie bakin cakes every 2 weeks but she still has to keep a full time job to paid for those expensive night outs and drinks.... The point being, any business you choose to go into, you need to do research and lots b4 hand and how much money you need monthly to advertise, not just one month but every month...
LVacan = please read my post " i do gift baskets not bake cakes that mi tia" lol and wait u have to pay for night out and drinks???Obviously u dont go clubbing with Genie !! lol cuz i dont pay to get in thats what guest lists are for and hook ups lol lol but ur right about everything else

I'm actually thinking of starting something part time, 'cause I have a nice, comfy job that's very flexible (not my dream job, though), but I'd like to find something that I'm passionate about and that'll generate some income. But I have to pinpoint something, 'cause my interests are varied (I wish I could do something with my BSing abilities), and I also need to find something profitable. As for working hard, I'm not afraid of that. I'm capable, plus I'm organized. I procrastinate, though, and so I have been putting this off for far too long. I just wanted to hear everyone's experiences, if you've been through this, and where you guys succeeded and where you failed and what you'd do different.

Your a very smart women so im sure u will find a great business to start. My suggestions is start a business that is more of a necessity then a luxury unless ur target market is higher class. Also the government offers great packages to start up business ppl and even courses you can take. I have a personal past time that i love and its gift baskets i make them for family friends and co workers some ppl have even bought them to raffel off at events its a small start and good profit. I do it as often as i get the chance mostly busy at xmas time and when theres a baby shower or bridal shower i have done some creative things but keep in mind this is more of a personal thing for me right now i plan to expand but not just yet lol. You can do all kinds of things and especially in the latin commuinty its word of mouth best advertising there is. Also whatever u do take pictures of ur protoges. My aunt does cakes again a pass time thing but now she does at least 5-6 cakes every two weeks from word of mouth shes also very resonable and uses fresh fruit which makes a difference and has orignial designs plus shes an amzing baker so. I mean it all starts small the best way build a clientel and then from there u take off.
But look into it research it good cuz most business succeed after the frist 5 years so its gonna be hard
my one bit of advice is to keep in mind that your income isn't getting charged income tax on it. so don't spend it all and make sure you keep a separate account or something for the tax man.
a lot of people get burned because they spent the tax money
How does one start her own business? I have so many ideas and know that by the time I reach a certain age I don't want to keep working for somebody else, but don't really know where to start? Any ideas? Any of you guys have a business of their own? What did you/would you do first? Any advantages/disadvantages to doing this?
