DIRECTLY FROM CP24

There couldn’t be a much worse time for this kind of accident – just as rush hour heats up on Friday afternoon.

But drivers on the 401 near Keele may find it’s a long way home, after a cube van apparently rear ended a tractor trailer.

One person has been airlifted to hospital in serious condition after the crash, which happened just before 2pm.

The victim has been taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, but the extent of the injuries aren’t clear.

The westbound collectors were closed for a time to allow the ambulance chopper to reach the scene, but things weren’t much better when two lanes were finally unblocked.

The subsequent backup reaches almost to Warden. And the express lanes are also jammed, as overflow traffic and onlookers both keep things slow.

All that activity is halting progress in the eastbound lanes, as well, as drivers stop to take a gander of their own.

Police are telling those who use North America's busiest highway to be patient, calling this incident one that could be “hours long.”

They’re asking motorists to avoid the area and look for an alternate route as they investigate the crash and prepare to clean up the mess it left behind.

But that may not help. The D.V.P. and the Gardiner are taking some of the overflow, making them heavier than usual, as well.

The cause of the accident isn’t known.

It's close to home to many off us... you may want to avoid the area for now as we head home/or out.
