Remnants of Katrina could reach Canada tonight CTV.ca News Staff
Parts of Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick could be hit with heavy rainfall over the next few days by remnants of hurricane Katrina, the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax said.
Heavy rainfall warnings may have to be issued as early as Tuesday night for southern Ontario, according to a statement posted at 8 a.m. ET by the centre.
Warnings could also be issued for southern Quebec and New Brunswick for Wednesday night and Thursday, the statement says.
"The gradient in rainfall amounts is expected to be very sharp."
When the weakened weather system hits Canada, it is expected to track through southern Ontario and move along the St. Lawrence River through Quebec.
Environment Canada forecaster Geoff Colson between 50 and 75 millimetres of rain could fall in the area around the Niagara Peninsula and along the St. Lawrence River.
Between 20 and 40 millimetres of rain could fall in areas north of the system, such as Toronto.
However, Carolyne Marshall, a weather forecaster with the hurricane centre, says it's extremely hard to predict where Katrina will go right now.
Katrina may only end up brushing Ontario and southern Quebec, with the bulk of the heavy rain falling on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, she said.
Katrina, which started out as a Category 5 storm just days ago, has since been downgraded to a tropical depression.
The hurricane slammed into the U.S. Gulf Coast on Monday, leaving a trail of death and destruction in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.
Dozens of deaths have been blamed on Katrina -- most of them in Mississippi -- and officials fear the death toll could rise dramatically as the search-and-rescue effort gets underway.
