Food is a different story. A reasonable wait time for food is fine.

I was referring to faster service at a bar.

Faster is not necessarily better – I preffer QUALITY over SPEEDY GONZALES service… I prefer to wait a REASONABLE amount of time for my meal; but I want it to come out looking good and tasting great!

All I can say is that I worked in the service industry as a waiter and what you get paid from the house (restaurant/bar) is just minimum wage – if you’re lucky… sometimes even less than that. So, to make some money on the job, you HAVE to get some tips… 15% (or the total of GST + PST) is reasonable for reasonable service… if service sucked and you want to let it be known – best way with a lower tip… Similarly if service was great, why not leave more or offer to buy the waiter/chef a beer… That’s pretty much how I tip… somewhere between 10 – 20% depending on how good the food/service was.

15% is a must! Most servers get paid very low per hour, and they depend on tip.  (except in classy restaurants where tip is included within the bill, or banquet halls where they they get paid much more per hour)

IF the waiter/waitress sucks then I guess 1 or 2 dollars is ok (or nada, if they are really b!tchy).  Usually servers are aware that low tip reflects on their poor service and inhospitality.  ALso don't judge the server if food does not taste great, they have no or very little say in it.

@ Miel....it all depends on the Banquet Hall and its owners......obviously the classier, expensive places will pay their staff more......and it's harder to get that job.....
Agency waiters make a lot less, of course......because the agency takes a big chunk.....(ohhh another word that ends in UNK).....LOL ...(that one was for Daeveed)

Ohh and Banquet Hall Bartenders make over $150 in tips only......minimum.....

(am I sensing career changes?? LOL)

A regular tip is usually 15% of the bill... ie. tax.

If the server is extremely nice and helpful and bends over backwards for you, hell yah... give him/her more than 15%.   However, if he/she is rude and sucky then forget it... Im not leaving 15% of anything!  One time I was on a date and we had such horrendous service that buddy just paid the bill to the penny and left ABSOLUTELY NO tip!

Which banquet hall???,. The experince that I have is the salary is sometimes less than $12 per hour,. but it s true what u said about the VIP treatment,.. the tip would be like an incentive for the waiter,. si el servicio es bueno porque no,..

i agree with most of your comments ,. either if you receive good or bad service ,. you should leave the 15% of the bill as a tip,. but If the service  is bad,. you should complaint to the manager,. because you pay for a good service . And regarding Tv Buff story ,. if they are good friends one shoul pay the bill ,. and the next time the other should pay it,.. todo depende en el grado de confianza que tengas con las personas ,..

A question ,. when you go to a banquet hall for a wedding or something,. do u tip the person who is serving you,.. ????

If it's regular friends, I would split the bill 3 ways... I've always done it this way every time I go out with friends, too much hassle figuring out who pays what...and it makes you look cheap. So what if they ate more, maybe next time you'll eat more.

I have another restaurant related question: when you go out with a bunch of people, let's say three couples, and you all consume different things, let's say you have a salad and the another couple has the most expensive meals in the restaurant, plus they buy cigars and expensive drinks, do you split the bill equally or does each pay for what they consume?
This is hypothetically speaking of course, but let's just say the couple that didn't spend that much never went out with the couple that left them bankrupt again.

one day some friends and i went out for dinner and we got the worst service ever, we waited for like 1hr for our food and stuff , so when the bill came, we left her a msg on the bill saying "THNX FOR THE SERVICE.........NOT!!!!!" and we left her a penny as a tip

No I wouldn't pay equaly the bill. That's just letting them take advantage at you & the guy ur with. It's rude & if they had matters they will come up & say no the bill it mostly ours, just pay ur part.

I don't think that's wrong.

Always leave the 15% which is the basic tip.

If great service of course you leave more, but weather or not you get service 15% should be left.

It's embarrasing not to. I can't do it, just don't go back again.

Good question.............you did the right thing :)

Any place that offers you anything while you wait has some class....so leaving a small tip shows your class...

(again, it's the hospitality, good service thing)......it's your judgement call.....did you feel good enough to leave a tip....OR...did you feel obligated cuz you felt good....LOL

How was the sushi anyway?

I have a question about this.

Last night I went to get sushi for take-out. They gave us green tea while we waited seated.

then they brought the food and the bill. I didn't know if I should leave a tip or not. So I left one, but I'm still not sure.

any advices? comments? slaps on the head?

I've been on both ends (client & server) so here it is.......

Yes 15% is the normal amount BUT if the service is great then I usually leave a lot more, especially if it's my first time in a place......you do it so they remember you and serve you even better next time (which if they don't then you only leave the server a dollar or 2) LOL.....so they learn......and never go back there again....

NO TOLERANCE FOR ATTITUDE OR BAD SERVICE POLICY.......they are in the hospitality business, THEY HAVE TO BE HOSPITABLE!!! they have one responsabilty, if they can't handle that, then they need to be reported and fast......to the owner, so he knows that the server is making him/her lose clients.

A minimum average bad tip is $1.....a minimum average good tip is $5.......this is just an an average, average place, average service.....etc ....As a server you need to make the client feel like his wish is your command, no matter how picky or B!chy they get....sometimes if you notice they're doing it to annoy you and test you out.......

The prestige of a tip is also normally based on the location where you work......sometimes people (including myself) will leave a tip in a luxurious place, even if the server had attitude (which is normally the bartenders).....just because it's the thing to do in that "nice place".....I guess because you don't want to look cheap, even if you're never going back there again......which if a place makes you feel uncomfortable the first time, you will never go back there anyway, so tip or no tip makes no difference.....they lost a client.

TIPPING depends on the person, how much class and cash they have.....IT IS NOT AN OBLIGATION BUT A GESTURE.....believe it or not some people still don't believe in tipping and they were never educated as the thing to do when you go out. Different ethnic cultures will tip differently regardless of their economic situation.....THIS IS 100% TRUE..... I sometimes might not order that extra drink or the desert JUST to have enough money for the server....

TIPPING "is the thing to do" mainly applies to bartenders even if their service and attitude sucked (which is mainly the case with Canadian bartenders)

Lets hear from Each and Everyone of you FOROHOLICS on this one.

THE TOPIC IS

*TIPPING*

15% of the Total Amount Spent Is The Standard When Leaving A Tip.

In my opinion some servers don’t deserve a tip at all because of awful service. However, if the service is great, then how much do you all really dish out.

Tell us all how much you tip out for good service . . .

What do you consider great service?

I visit very few places on a regular basis. I love good service.

I am really interested in hearing from the ladies . . .
