Based on the fact that your friend is not too concerned about the technical abilities of the camera I suggest a camera that is of good quality, inexpensive and easy to use. Something like this Canon camera for $170
No, Quixote, I already got a camera. It works fine and I like it (even though it's not an MP3 player and it doesn't make coffee or yerba mate or whatever).
Now MiMi's looking for one. But he's a follower, not a leader and couldn't start a thread of his own. double
Man.. my ability to read dates and threads properly has degenerated. I deserve a splat of my own.

Okay, so I'm looking for a good, affordable digital camera to give as a present to someone who's not all that technical and doesn't even like to take pictures, but he's been asking for one for a while now. I've looked at a couple, not so bad, point and shoot, between 4 and 5 MP (which is as far as I know about digital cameras). What else should I be looking for? Optical zoom? digital zoom? Brand? manual features? What do you guys recommend? I've checked Henry's, FutureShop, BestBuy, 2001AudioVideo and that's about it? What's the best place to shop for this?
What is your budget?

The only Olympus I've owned was back in the SLR days a million years ago. I love Nikon lenses but this looks like a better deal overall. Thoughts? Recco's??
Don't forget to get the marihuana case... I wonder if it comes with it...
On that note, we're looking for a professional camera too, big ass lens and all. I don't think I can go to BB or FS and ask a sales person for a good camera with a big ass lens, though. What chu guys think? God? Mary Magdalene? Satan?
BB or FS are gonna BS you.
All depends what you're gonna shoot...each camera/lense has diff apps.

Sorry, I couldn't find a more recent thread. But I was thinking of getting this camera at Best Buy:
Olympus Stylus 770SW 7.1MP Digital Camera
wS('1','10')
This Olympus Stylus 770SW is the most durable camera. You can drop it (from 5 feet), dunk it (to 33 feet), freeze it (-10°C/14°F) or even try to crush it (up to 220lbf), and it will still take amazing photos. But the 770SW isn't all brawn and no brains. It features a bright 2.5" Hypercrystal LCD so you can easily compose, view and share your images underwater or in direct sunlight.
Regular Price: $449.99
On Sale: $377.99
After $72.00 instant savings
and the 2Gb XD card is only $59.99.

Buffy, when you get the camera, please remember what the little tiny strap is there for!...When I went to Cuba with my boyfriend back in January, we walked all the way to the coral reefs, far from the resort and we decided to take personal "Sports Illustrated" pics, with the scenary, coral reefs, etc.. Well, I was amazed at this one reef that had 2 holes in it and the cave under it pumped the water up and down the hole. I bent down to take a pic (with a camcorder under my arm)...amazed, i took a pic and the camcorder came out from under my arm, I quickly caught it, sending the camera flying through the pumping water hole! I WAS MORTIFIED! My boyfriend tried to catch it, but it was going down...down down....man......anyway, gracia a Dios that there were snorklers who salvaged the camera. The camera itself was dead, but we managed to save the memory stick. Moral of story.....always use the strap around your wrist when not in use! PS. It was a Sony Cybershot p73 model, in which I replaced with a SONY Cybershot P93...its a great camera. Easy to use, great pixels....you can do so many things with it! Let me know, i will give you all the features! (you can even do shot video shots!)

all the cameras come with removable memory. SD, XD, Memory Stick, Compact Flash are different types of memory cards your camera can use. Olympus Cameras mostly use XD and Sony uses only Memory Sticks. the other 2 are used by a bunch of manufacturers. The reason why I like SD is because a) they are cheaper than all the other ones, except Compact flash but CF cards are too big and can get damaged easier. and b) because a lot of other devices use SD cards too like PDA'S so u can take the card from the camera and pop it into ur PDA or cellphone (if ur cell has a SD slot) and view/email the pics right off there... it doesnt really matter what size card comes with the camera (16 or 32) because regardless you are going to have to buy a bigger one. specially with a 4MPixel camera 16 or 32mb we're talkign about 12 to 24 pics at max resolution. you can get a 1GB Sd Card at futureshop for like $149 now, half the price of an Memory stick.. -- Edited by Phantasma at 12:15, 2005-06-15
Thank you so much, Phantasmita. Now I won't feel like such an idiot when I go look for the camera 'cause I'll know exactly what I'm looking for. Greatly appreciated...

Oh, thank you, everybody. I always know I can count on you for useful (and sometimes not so useful) info.
@ Phantasma, my personal tekkie 411 provider, what is SD or high speed SD? How about memory? I've seen 16 and 32... I was gonna go for 16, but does it matter? As for money, I was going to go 400 tops, 'cause I already have a Panasonic MiniDV that I just got in March, which already has a built in digital camera, crappy, but it does the job. What do you think?

Also look at the battery type.. rechargeable batts are a great cost saver but if u run out of battery at a critical moment.. (u know, wedding march is playing) its gonna take u about a half an hour to recharge and u may miss some of the action. Regular batteries are more costly (cause u gotta keep buying them) but its easy to have replacements handy.
Memory type, GO with SD, High speed SD if u can. Everything else is either too big, too expensive or too uncommon right now.
Must have optical zoom... atleast 3X if not more.. dont let them try to sell u on digital zoom.. digital zoom is useless, optical zoom is what you need.
size of the display. any camera worth looking at will have an LCD on it so you can see the pics as u take them, delete them or whatever.. try to get the biggest screen you can afford.
FOr the money I would recomend a Canon SD200 or Sd300 depending on how much you wanna spend.
