Argentina coach Basile resigns after loss to Chile The Canadian Press 10/16/2008 9:47:25 PM Text SizeBUENOS AIRES, Argentina - Argentina coach Alfio Basile resigned on Thursday, a day after a historic loss to Chile in World Cup qualifying.
"Basile spoke with the president of the AFA, Julio Grondona, and irrevocably announced his resignation for personal reasons," Argentine Football Association spokesman Ernesto Cherquis Bialo told reporters.
"I'm surprised," Grondona said.
Cherquis Bialo said the AFA tried to persuade Basile to change his mind, but "he was very decided, very determined."
Potential replacements include Argentina youth coach Sergio Batista, River Plate's Diego Simeone and Miguel Angel Russo.
The team's next match is a friendly on Nov. 19 against Scotland.
Argentina ended a five-match winless streak in World Cup qualifying with a 2-1 victory against Uruguay on Saturday, but the grumbling of fans and media continued that Basile should have been doing more with a talented squad including Lionel Messi, Juan Roman Riquelme and Sergio Aguero.
That criticism intensified after a 1-0 defeat on Wednesday in Santiago, Argentina's first ever loss to Chile in any official competition, and its first loss to Chile in 35 years.
That result dropped Argentina into a tie with Chile for third place in South America. The top four will automatically qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
Basile took over Argentina after the 2006 World Cup for his second stint in charge. He also directed the team from 1990 to 1994.

Venezuela volvió a golpear ocho minutos después.

So congrats to Ecuador on the win. Nothing matters at the end of the day except the final result. The ref....the fact that you couldn't kick Chile's a ss even with one man down the whole game. None of that matters but the win and the points.
SO Duro I'll give you your bottle as promised and congrats on the win.

To those who comment and know nothing about the game well...no comment - lol.
Oh and Danny if this thread proves anything it's that you were wrong about ARGENTINOS being the most annoying.

hahahaa uruguay tied it in the last minute again friggin' uruguayos! they just took 4th place, momentarily that is, coz tomorrow we're getting at least a point off argentina (i'm praying for 3), ecua will probably tie venezuela...
huguito my chilean brother.....looks like your days of thinking that ur seleccion can make it to 2010 will be done.........you guys r getting merked by argentina manana
things r looking good for ecua right now:):):):) we play the toughest teams in ecua ...brazil paraguay argentina uruguay.....and u know we never loose thanks to our high and mighty altitude!! hahaha the rest arent a big deal....

Its amazing that some people are blaming the ref. The ref was great he laid down the law from the get go. Now don't you think that if you see that the ref is tough why would you commit stupid mistakes.. Either way Ecuador was going to win cause we we're playing attacking futball.
it should be pretty good from here on cause we play brazil and argentina uruguay at home as well as paraguay the 4 toughest teams......venezuela is playing like crap ...so im thinking we can definetly beat them tomorrow
Yeah, Go Team - We are in the running and we have a fighting chance! We better win against Venezuela on Wednesday 'cause the two games after that will be much tougher - against Brasil and Paraguay.

Not everything I post or say on foro are necesarily true facts. <- THAT is a fact! :blankstare:
You lost to the better team. Why can't you admit that? The Chilean player were dirty and you know that don't blame the ref he was tough. The only reason Ecuador didn't put 8 in chile was cause your goalie was amazing he was your best player on the team he gave his all
...you honestly think Ecua has a good team?! They had an extra player almost the whole game and they barely scored on us and on a goalie error! The ref screwed us over from the get go, a yellow card at the second minute for saying that the ball had no air? What is that?! four yellows and one red 30 minutes in? The ref was uruguayan, the same team that is fighting for a spot with Chile and the same country where they're investigating fixed games, that ref was a clown, chile played like crap i agree but having to take out your #10 within the first 15 mins screws things up for anybody, that's why Chile lost but Ecuador, i'm sorry but they're not a good team yet, they still got a lot to prove, no aim at all or maybe it was because of la altura lolll if Ecua gets consistency and beats other good teams then i'll give u guys props coz right now it is too soon, same goes for Chile, it seems like we have one good game and one bad game, ojala le ganemos a Argentina coz i'm sure Ecua will at least tie in Venezuela...
my chilean pana u and i perfectly know that ur players were playing dirty from the get go ....first red card was a must did u see the f1cking tackle? that guy fuentes is a dirty b1tch ...and went straight for the knee of guerron.....the other red card on jara wasent to bad ...pero regardless u guys couldnt even get close to our net...yall had 2 or 3 chances at the most.....el chupete suaso didnt do anything.... .....como dijo benitez "chile no tiene ataque " and it was proven............
your goalie was probably the best player cause he saved some good shots ...everyone else just played defensively and s ****ty......the whole team looked ok at first but once fuentes came off the whole team went to hell
u lost 4 good players now.....ahora si preparensen con argentina messi tevez and aguero r gonna do wonders on yall
venezuela is playing ****ty ...loosing bad at home.....they r getting another a$$whipping on wendesday!!!

DAMMMMMMMMMMM F!CKING RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MI LINDO ECUADOR WAS JUST ATTACKING AND ATTACKING SINCE THE GAME STARTED.......IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN 4-0.......CHILENOS SUCIOS...U GUYS WERE PLAYING TOO DIRTY NOW U GUYS R SCREWED CAUSE U LOST LIKE 4 GOOD PLAYERS NOW..AND ARGENTINA IS GOING TO MERK U GUYS!
THERES STILL HOPE FOR ECUA!!!WEDNESDAY VENEZUELA IS OURS!! VIVA MI ECUADOR!!!!!!:):):)
That's exactly what Colombia needs a tie..or Ecuador to win. (Go Ecuachuchos!) The Chile drama is over...Now that Pinto is gone as well as half of the players, I like this team a lot better!
Mastro, has this new team played any friendlies?
No really, in fact Lara is only an interim for the next two games..... But the problem with Pinto is that he changed the whole team after the Copa America : (Calero, Mondragon, Angel, Yepes, Cordoba(s), Bedoya, Totono, Ferreira quitted due to differences with him) and the team didn't have any important experienced player....people didn't say much because he was getting the results, that's why two games after he was fired. But this guy Lara has brought experience along with some of the new talents from youth teams that finish 3rd and 4th place in 2005-6 World Cups.
but with Paragay and Brasil mi pronostico es reservado
