Look we found this place almost in the border of Belize and Mexico...
the view, the beach, the water is 100 times better than any fancy hotel in Cancun
and we payd 20 bucks...a night...Includes

2 Hamacs
4 bottles of water
and an amazing experience.

BTW they only take cash and their internet was down biggrin

That's the way to go thumbsup.gif ... Sleeping in hamacs is so relaxing, I also like the light coming thru the walls that sounds like my type of staying, unfortunately Cancun is not Mexico anymorecry is just fidecomiso Greengo

I haven't tried couchsurfing but I recommend the hospitality club,  http://www.hospitalityclub.org/ , I had a great experience, I was received in Copenhaguen and they even took me for a tour and I party with the people in Antwerp....Here I have had a few visitors from hot chicks from Austria and Switzerland and it was soo cool and refreshing to hang out with them...If you are laid back I recommend it, save you some money (just make sure where in the city the people leave cause sometimes transportation to their places might be more expensive than staying in a Hostel), but more worthy is the experience and you can make some friends all over the world!
