Dogo - IF you want to go to Merida I can get you a house to rent and I will even through in a tour guide! lollol

No im kidding!

You know what Merida is beautiful! On sundays they close down the downtown square and have shows and little markets! Its nice and they offer tours so your not searching the city by yourself (tour guide offer stands) they have nice hotels and theres lots to do and learn! Plus its all in Pesos and way cheap!! Took $400us bucks and came back with money and i spent it on all kinds of stuff!!!Progresso is like half hour away with a beautiful beach! Plus all the mayan ruins and cenotes! There is lots to do!

But if you are deciding and want to do the american vacation go to cancun for a more relaxed kids fun go to the Mayan Riviera!

Oyahhhh you've been there isn't gorgeous....

Oh my dear chilenita, i think you and i, do have fear of what we cannot see.

Here we were with hubby, walking through the gorgeous blue water, enjoying the waves and it's warmth, when all of a sudden this school of fish come slamming on my legs!!! I SCREEEECHED like a little girl, and in a split second i was on hubby's back, yellling at him to get me the heck out of the water. I refused to go in the water after that. no.gif

Dogo...I'm taking my boys to Merida..I'm renting a car and I can drive to all the Mayan ruins, Xcaret, Tulum, chel ha, etc etc.. In Merida there are lots musueums, mercados, haciendas and,  you have a bunch of beaches at the same drive distance from Toronto to Barrie..nice beaches (tourist free) where kids can play.

Merida ia very nice, historical city, close to cultural attractions, I would say Meridas has the best from both worlds.

I know!...
I haven't been to Merida though, but have researched it quite a bit (for other reasons) and that whole area (Telchac, Chelem, Progreso, etc...) and would really like to check it out... just not quite ready to roam almost aimlesly with a couple of kids. If I were by myself.. no problem. But I would definitely consider it for next time

Dogo - go to mexico lots more to do! Mayan Riviera is not a party place like Cancun there both actually very different! Plus theres more to see like the ruins and Cenotes which are cool plus so much more to do! I would say mexico is pretty safe and still affordable another place you may want to check out is Cozumel its still up in coming but lots to see and do!

I don't know if it's changed at all.... but when I went a few years ago, there was nothing in varadero. No restaurants, no malls/stores, attractions, etc... unless you went to ANOTHER resort.
I remember the first day stepping out of the hotel and asking a Cuban guy: "So which way is el centro?" he pauses, yells to another guy across the street "HEY! Carlitos... where is el centro" he says "El centro?.... you're in it!" blankstare.gif it was pretty much un barrio
Other than the beach, the resort.. or maybe if you're into checking out the arquitecture in Havana (although I've never been) there's very little to do. Thank God I went with a bunch of other guys and we befriended some Cubans (que nos llevaron a unos clubs de mala muerte) otherwise I would've had to spend 7 days on the beach, and not much else
Mexico has a bunch of crap to do. Ruins, Eco parks, aquariums, shopping, etc
Cuba is good for one thing only.... you know...

Done Cuba too (varadero)....
The thing with cuba is that other than the resort itself, there isn't much to do/see outside of them. Compared to Mexico, anyway
I've been to playa del carmen just for a day, and loved it! There's a good balance of party and family entertainment, and still feels like you're in Mexico... not even close to cancun

the site I opted NOT to purchase from after reading reviews was lastminute.com.  I didn't like what I read about them HERE

Look for reviews of lesser known sites before you purchase.  Good Luck.

I'd be very careful purchasing from other not well known sites... A couple of weeks ago, I could have saved a couple of hundred on my flight to NYC through a lesser known website (will try to find it 4 u) - BUT after reading reviews on the site, I opted to spend the extra $ and know that my travel arrangements would be more secure.
