I am assuming that by 'Spanish language group' they are referring to students who do not speak English as their first language.

39% is a huge number.   I would not be so quick to blame it on the school or society.

I think some of the most common reasons are...

- students find material difficult and give up
- students join the workforce out of preference or necessity.
- teen pregnancy

In all of those cases, the students make decisions that impact their academic career and that really can't be blamed on anyone else.

LOL.  Urdu = Pakistani.

As for this post, I agree with Miguel when he says that "parenting can go a long way".  I think to an extent neighbourghood and income MAY have something to do with it but it's not always the case.  I know a lady who has 4 kids, she is a single mom, has always lived in the "hot" areas according to some.  She got all her kids involved in cadets since they were young, and i think this helped a lot cause her kids are well educated, well behaved, the oldest ones work, go to school and attend their cadets activities.  I really do agree is in the emphasis you put on your kids and in trying to keep them in the right path, doing it the right way.

It has to do with socio-economics. In general poverty causes lack of education and lack of education causes poverty. It is cyclic. Not all new comers to this country are set with wonderful jobs or the skills that are necessary to attain them. Imagine then that you are a teenager living under the circumstances of poverty while trying to be like every other teenager, - and, you may have to hold down a job in order to support yourself or your family. Maybe you come from a large family and have to work alot to help out and don't have the time for school. Or maybe you start working to do either and you get a taste of money and decide you want to put all of your efforts into working rather than getting an education. This lack of insight catches many teens off-guard years later when they are unable to move from a teens lifestyle to an adult's without the required education to get a higher paying job. Then again maybe some are content as laborers and know that with dedication, hard work, and consistency they will be able to etch a life for themselves. Of course tied into poverty are issues of drug abuse, crime, and violence, and being involved in the last three can really alter one's desired path.

Also these figures are weird...256 latino students?
I would want to know how the 'sample' was chosen...
Its quite obvious that there are way more than 256 latino grade nine students in Toronto...
Was this a sample taken from select schools?
If so maybe the results are reflective of the teaching...

i bet if you cross referenced it with neighbourhood and income level, you'd probably find that latinos are no dumber than other people of the same neighbourhood and similar income levels.

i don't support that whole notion of hispanic or muslim or any publicly funded school baced on ethnicity.

let all the vatos hang out with more vatos and get into trouble? no thanks. good parenting can go a long way.

Why are so many young latinos turning out like Danny C -young and dumb?

Why? It's a socialization issue, latin kids specially the ones from the later waves of immigrations are having problems adapting to the culture, diversity and they just refuse to accept the Canadian standards,  lots of them having dragging by their families to a strange country without being asked where the Latin culture  is  very irrelevant unlike Chinese, Afro's, and middle eastern people.  There should be more community support and maybe Hispanic schools where they can develop their identity without  being obligated to canadianize themselves all at once.

Neruda, although before we shared different opinions about Latinos, I've learned to understand your point of view. And although I, unfortunately, fall into that 39.1% I left school for very unfair reasons. I'm not trying to make excuses for myself, but I have tried to better myself. I succeeded by getting my diploma and now I hold not the best of jobs, but I can still fend for myself.

You can't really say Latinos are dumb-asses, simply because not every student leaves for the same reasons.
