I agree with toto on this one... people can't abuse the system and expect us to pay for it.

Yes, I know, most of us(including myself) have received some help from either the government or other people. I would certainly help anybody in need, especially if it's somebody from my own country(or race), but this is a different case, it's not somebody that needs help settling in, or someone who was suddenly diagnosed or who's been in an accident. It's really a grey area.

There's lots of girls that get pregnant, can you imagine if we needed to help every one of them because they can't support their kids??

The point of the story wasn't "quien la mando a la tonta a tener su hijo aqui, si bien se pudo haber ido a Mexico a tenerlo." No. The point of the story is that someone from our own culture and background had a bit of an emergency and it would be nice, in the spirit of Christmas, to be able to help out; if not for the mother, then we can do it for the child. I just figured in these times of holiday joy and cheers, some of us are more prone to be generous, especially with someone in need and someone who's not trying to abuse the system "intentionally". We all know a lot of us do abuse the system, and I understand perfectly why some of us become cynics, but we also have to be generous once in while, right? What better time to show our generosity than Christmas?

you all have a point

Lets hope people reading this realize that Canada is a great country but there are rules that we have to follow to make the system work.

It is true that they took a risk, and now is up the Canadian citizens (us) and other ilegals to help them. But we have to tell others that  are here ilegaly, that most of the services are only to the ones that follow the rules, if we abuse the system there will be a lot more people that will have to start paying for the doctor and other services that right now are pay by the Goverment.

To the ones that have open minded and realice that yes, they made a mistake to have the baby here but lets remember that we are all human, and is up to us to be better humans and give them our hand, remember that to some of us Canada give us a hand, now is time for us to give our hand to this family.

Toto

Lets hope that the hispanic-Canadian living in Toronto likes to help.

... Please read this story (from CP24):

It’s more than a tale of two cities. It’s a bureaucratic nightmare of one family, two countries and a bill that no one expected.
The story began when Helder Ramos, a Canadian, married Carolina Ramos, who hails from Mexico. Changes to the immigration laws mean she wasn’t automatically granted citizenship here when the couple got hitched, and when she had her baby, Fatima, she experienced complications.
She needed an emergency C-section and weeks later, an appendectomy. But because she wasn’t a citizen, she wasn’t covered by O.H.I.P.
And that caused the hospital to send her a bill for $18,000. When the family couldn't pay it, a second, third and final notice came – until the couple owed an astounding $21,316.44.
Now in addition to the expenses associated with their new baby, the Ramos’ are rapidly sinking in a quicksand of debt from which they may never escape.
“Thank you for the wonderful baby,” exhorts Helder. “No thank you for the $21,000.” Friends and supporters are holding a fundraiser Tuesday night, desperately hoping to somehow raise the money to reach the end of this bottomless quagmire.
“She's worth a lot more than $21,000,” her father remarks about his new daughter. “The problem is that, at this point in our life ... as a family, $21,000 is more than what this father makes in a year.”
In the meantime, the Ramoses continue to live a divided life – caring for a newborn, paying their bills and trying to settle an immigration mess that’s left them without an entry point to the finish line.
