Thomas Beatie, un transexual, casado, dará a luz a una niña el próximo verano después de varios intentos por quedarse embarazado y tras sufrir el rechazo de la sociedad y su familia, informó la revista The Advocate.

Beatie, cuyo aspecto actual es el de un hombre embarazado de cinco meses, se operó para eliminar sus pechos femeninos y a tratamiento de testosterona en su proceso de cambio de sexo, aunque conservó sus órganos reproductores.

Junto a su esposa Nancy, con la que se casó hace más de diez años, siempre quiso tener un hijo, pero ella sufrió una histerectomía (extirpación del útero) que se lo impide.

Una vez que alcanzaron una situación económica acomodada la pareja tomó la decisión de que Beatie fuera el encargado de gestar el bebé de ambos.

El plan de este matrimonio se encontró entonces con la oposición de la comunidad médica, sus vecinos y familiares.

Los doctores nos discriminaban por sus creencias religiosas, algunos se negaban a llamarme por mi nombre de varón y a reconocer a Nancy como mi mujer. Los recepcionistas se reían de nosotros y la familia y los amigos nos negaron su apoyo. Gran parte de la familia de Nancy no sabía que yo era transexual, explicó Beatie.

Después de un año en el que visitaron a diez doctores y gastaron varios miles de dólares, Thomas y Nancy consiguieron acceder a un banco de esperma para engendrar a su bebé, pero el primer óvulo fecundado se instaló fuera del útero, y Beatie sufrió extirpación de una de sus trompas de falopio.

La segunda tentativa tuvo más éxito y Beatie se encuentra embarazado y espera dar a luz a una niña alrededor del 3 de julio de este año.
