Chasing cheap highs, tens of thousands of Ontario adolescents are strangling themselves or each other in whats known as the choking game, a report out of Torontos Centre for Addiction and Mental Health says.
We knew from press reports that this phenomenon exists but the great numbers were a surprise along with the fact that many kids only in Grade 7 were taking part, said Jurgen Rehm, a senior scientist at the centre.
The game is about giving the person being choked the euphoric effects caused by oxygen deprivation to the brain. __________________________ Damn - in grade 7! 12-13 year old not very bright to play this silly game! I remember talking to my kid about this - will talk again.

CDC: At least 82 youths have died playing 'choking game' in U.S.
By THE CANADIAN PRESS
TORONTO - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says at least 82 children and teens in the United States have died over the past 12 years playing what's known as "the choking game."
The game involves intentionally choking oneself or being choked by someone else to the point where the player experiences a brief state of euphoria or a high.
Two Grade 12 students in New Brunswick were recently suspended for the rest of the school year after they offered to teach four Grade 9 students how to play the game.
The CDC says parents need to be on the lookout for signs their children might be playing the game, which also goes by the names "space monkey" or the "pass-out game."
Those signs include bloodshot eyes and marks on the neck, or the unexplained presence of items like dog leashes, choke collars, bungee cords or ropes, scarves and belts tied to bedroom furniture.
The CDC study found that most parents of children who died were unaware of the choking game before their child's death.
Most of those who died playing the game were males, and most were between 11 and 16 years old.
Three or fewer deaths a year were reported in the period from 1995 to 2004, says the study, which was based on media reports.
But there were 22 deaths in 2005 and 35 in 2006. Nine were reported in the first 10 months of 2007 and the researchers aren't sure how to explain the decline.
They say, however, that the study probably underestimates the numbers of deaths caused by the choking game that are actually occurring.
The researchers warn that kids playing the game may not understand the danger they are putting themselves in.

At the public school I work in we had a little talk about this. And were told to be aware of this game the children are playing. I'm not sure if you guys have heard of it. I wish I had the article on it so I could post it. But it is were children are chocking each other to get high. They can pass out and even die from playing this game. This is becoming more popular and I just wanted to send out a heads up to all you working with school age child and have children of their own. I had a talk with my son again about these kind of things today. I don't think he would ever do any thing like this but kids are kids and you never know. Best to be aware. ________________________________
WTF - I never heard about this... Are kids nowadays this naive (stupid?)?
