The bastard was caughted...but he is saying that he was drunk and he doesn't remember anything, he will go to trial, but I don't see any major punishment  applied on him by what I read.  I know Spain is  a different context with different social problems, that's known for everyone, but at least the cameras will create some precautions and the potential offenders will be more aware and will refrain from these brutalities.

Eventually this racism will bring an uprising with young ecuadorians and  south american youth. I won't be suprised when ecuadorian or south american kids start gathering to form gangs to fight this racism.furious

I hate the idea, for obvious reasons (privacy)
I don't really want to be taped while I pick my nose or scratch my left 'one'
Not only that, but this is just another way to justify another fare hike, and shows just how liberal the TTC is with their spending of 'other people's money'
Anyone notice how buses now have those bigass blue lights in the front? I wonder how much THAT cost to retrofit ALL the friggin buses!! Because, yeah, that was REALLY necesary, PFFFT! WTF is that for??? safety? to actually be able to see the bus coming?? give me a break!
TTC is nothing but a big money swallowing hole. With bad service (buses at least) expensive, overpaid employees. A cancer to the taxpayers, with a bully union

I was actually discussing the TTC with someone a few days ago and how bad the service is and why seldom take it. Well... because it SUCKS!
Why does it suck? Because of their overspending and outrageous collective agreements

I say if you want to have a decent (bus) service... privatize it! (not the tracks)

I was reading a blog and this guy's post pretty much sums up what I think of the TTC

"Lets just say that I am appalled at the salary figures for TTC employees.

I have been with my company for over 4 years. I work as a software developer, and I get paid 52K a year. It galls me that civic servants, due to the bombastic nature of their unions can make more than me while doing less. There are times in which I have to work late in order to get the next release out on time. I accrue no overtime at all. If Im lucky, I may get an annual performance bonus of about $2000. And this is the compensation standard of other employees in my capacity. Weve spent gobloads of money to get an education so we can all get decent jobs with large requirements. To find out that we did all this for a job that pays less than bus drivers and garbagemen (dont get me started on these guys), both with a lower educational standard, is offensive to the hard working taxpayers of Ontario.

The TTC is hobbled by one critical flaw: that the transit workers are not deemed essential personnel and therefore still have the right to strike. May I remind the TTC and the Province of Ontario (who refused to confer this essential personnel designation to transit workers but wanted to confer this to teachers during the Harris days, which makes no sense) that the TTC is the backbone of this city. If the TTC goes out of service for just one day, you can be sure that there is a lot of economic harm for Torontonians. I know how that feels, as I was forced to take a day off during the recent wildcat strike.

Because the TTC workers have a right to strike, this is basically their point weapon in making outrageous demands against TTC management, demands the management know is expensive. I believe TTC management and commissioner Giambrone when they say that they dont have money to run all the services needed for all Torontonians.

Fine, I am anti-union, but I believe that the reason why the TTC and by extension, the city, is in this financial mess is because of the financial straightjacket imposed by the unions. Increasing labour costs means less financial freedom, which means the city is now painted into a corner. We cut service and increase fares to make up for the shortfall. And dont get me started on when the city caved into extravagant union demands days before Pope John Paul II was to arrive in Toronto for World Youth day. Garbagemen making $56K a year (more than I make)? You can thank Unions for that."

If you don't like being on camera take a taxi or drive your way around TO.

On my side i support this idea, and i think we should put cameras on more places as long at this is for our security

Giambrone said it'll cost $18 million, of which Ottawa will kick in $6 million, to outfit the fleet of 1,700 buses, 248 street cars and 800 subway cars with cameras

I don't like the idea of being "caught on camera" or being videotaped without me giving consent to be on camera.  It invades my privacy in a way that it doesn't really affect me; but I just don't like the idea that there is a video out there of me getting on the bus, playing sodoku and scratching my neck.

Not really a big deal since video footage is supposedly only going to be accessed by police.

TTC riders on board with Big Brother
By TOM GODFREY, SUN MEDIA

TTC riders say they feel safer now that Big Brother will soon be watching them with 12,000 crime-fighting cameras.

Councillor Adam Giambrone said yesterday the photos of riders will only be used by police to help solve crimes.

"The photos won't be used by us to chase fare invaders," said Giambrone, who is also TTC chairman. "Only the police can have access to these photographs."

Starting in June, some 1.5 million daily transit users will be photographed every time they board a bus, streetcar, subway or enter a maintenance yard. The TTC will store the images and only police will have access to them.

Giambrone said it'll cost $18 million, of which Ottawa will kick in $6 million, to outfit the fleet of 1,700 buses, 248 street cars and 800 subway cars with cameras.

He said police or a TTC command centre can use the system to talk to passengers and view inside subway cars in emergency situations. The surface vehicles use passive cameras which constantly operate but are only reviewed when police are searching for a suspect.

Giambrone said the cameras could also be used by police in searching for potential terrorists.

TTC riders yesterday said they were pleased to have the cameras rolling since it makes them feel safer.

"I will feel better knowing there's cameras watching," Justin Porien, 28, said. "I think most people will feel safer with them."
