Here's a contender for mother of the year: Tatiana Khalina.

The 42-year-old Siberian woman, who already has 11 children, expanded her brood in a big way with the birth of a 17-pound, one-ounce baby girl. Little Nadezhda, although it'd be a stretch to describe her as little, was born by caesarean section at a maternity clinic in the town of Aleisk in southern Siberia.

The Sept. 17 birth went smoothly according to Nurse Svetlana Gildeyeva and following the birth the child was transferred to a hospital in the city of Barnaul. A doctor at that facility, Irina Kurdeka, confirmed that Nadezhda was doing well and developing normally, although at that size it's unlikely anyone's questioning her development.

A local newspaper said the family earned a modest living; Khalina's husband is reportedly on contract with a local military unit.

"We have presented them with a good washing machine, a food package and a card," social services chief Marina Alistratova told the newspaper. "We will keep supporting them in the future."

The average weight for newborns is about 7 pounds - the chubby-cheeked Nadezhda was more than twice that. But believe it or not she's not the biggest child ever born. A baby born in the United States in 1879 tipped the scales at 23 pounds, 12 ounces. It died less than 24 hours after coming into the world. The heaviest surviving baby, according to Guinness World Records, was born in 1955 in Italy and weighed 22 pounds, 8 ounces.
