Queen's Student Called 'Ghetto Dude' After Applying For Government Job

A Queen's university honours student who applied for a job with the Ontario public service received an email calling him a 'ghetto dude'.  The political science major, who is black, was waiting to hear about his application as a media analyst when he received the e-mail Friday.

"This is the ghetto dude that I spoke to before," Aileen Siu, a part-time contract worker at the cabinet office, wrote in an e-mail to another person. Unfortunately for Siu, the forward was also sent back to 22-year-old Evan Reid.

Siu said the e-mail was sent by mistake and didn't refer to anyone outside her circle of friends. Despite the furor raised over the e-mail, Reid says he is still interested in the media analyst job.

Tony Dean, head of the Ontario Public Service, says a sincere apology has been offered to Reid and his office will be taking appropriate steps to address Siu's conduct.

"Comments of this sort are totally inappropriate anywhere, let alone in a workplace, and they will certainly not be tolerated," he stated Sunday.
